From the start, Kane and his creative team have always guided the stories of the Halifax Legal Aid team by reading the signs of the times, and addressing the impact of COVID-19 was going to have to be in the cards for season three. Especially while cast and crew were forging ahead with production on the show according to the strict health and safety protocols dictated by the industry to keep the cameras rolling.

As season three begins, Marcie and her colleagues have already had a year of coping with COVID and the social and political upheaval that has come with the pandemic and Black Lives Matter. There are changes within her family and her community that will continue to carry dramatic repercussions, and pressures at work that affect everyone from rookie lawyers up to legal aid administrator Colleen MacDonnell, played by Newfoundland native Natasha Henstridge.

Created by Kane, who also serves as executive producer and showrunner, Diggstown follows Marcie Diggs and her team at Halifax Legal Aid as they take on complex cases in the criminal justice system. The first two seasons, which were picked up by FOX in the U.S. earlier this year, ran to six episodes each.

Centred on Black Canadian legal aid lawyer Marcie Diggs (Vinessa Antoine), the Halifax-based series covers cases involving vulnerable citizens as they collide with an imperfect legal system. This season adds another layer: the pandemic.

Already this season, Marcie has defended a long-term care worker (Jully Black) who was accused of infecting a resident with the virus. But there are still plenty of non-COVID storylines. Other episodes have focused on a man accused of killing an off-duty officer in self-defence, and a woman from the historically Black community of Africville who faces life in jail.

Season three of Diggstown will have eight episodes. The first two seasons, which aired in Canada in 2019 and 2020, have had six episodes apiece. Season three is expected to film in early 2021 in Halifax, Nova Scotia.

This season, lead "Marcie Diggs" (played by Vinessa Antoine) and her colleagues at Halifax Legal Aid, including social worker "Iris Beals" (played by Garnett), continue their exploration of social justice issues such as birth alerts, long-term care during the pandemic, and how police ignore or neglect sexual assault cases (especially among women of colour). She conducted a phone interview with The Suburban from her home in Los Angeles.

Diggstown focuses on Marcie Diggs, a prominent corporate attorney who reevaluates her goals and switches to working for a legal aid clinic (Halifax Legal Aid) after her aunt commits suicide after a vindictive investigation. Season two of the show featured Diggs and her fellow legal aid crusaders continuing their fight against a criminal justice system that treats our most vulnerable citizens with no compassion. In the third season, we saw that people's viewpoints, priorities, and relationships have changed in a post-COVID society, making Diggs' work even more crucial. In the fourth and final season of Diggstown, we will see Marcie have mental and physical difficulties and be threatened and deceived by a lot of people, and she struggles to deal with one conflict after another. This upcoming season will focus on issues such as abuse at Indian Day Schools, the plight of migrant workers, how a pregnant trans man is treated by the healthcare system, and the sterilization of Black women.

Diggstown Season 4 premieres on Wednesday, October 12, 2022, on CBC and CBC Gem. The final season will consist of 6 episodes, with the series finale airing on Wednesday, November 16.

It's also good to know that two seasons of the show are available on Crave. However, since the third season is not yet available there, we're unsure if the fourth and newest installment will land on Crave anytime soon.

BET+ picked up the CBC show in 2020 and added it to its roster of original programming, and you can watch three seasons of Diggstown by adding BET+ to Amazon Prime Video for $9.99 per month after a 7-day free trial. We should also mention that the Prime membership costs $14.99 monthly and comes with a 30-day free trial.
