Cob Oven Construction Workshop DATES: July 28th and 29th (Sat/Sun). LOCATION: Morden, Manitoba. Specific location given upon registration. TIME: Starts at 9am both days. RAIN DATES: August 18th and 19th (Sat/Sun). FACILITATOR: Paolo Riva. REGISTRATION FEE: $175 + GST. REGISTRATION DEADLINE: Friday, July 13th. MAX. 15 PARTICIPANTS Cob is a mixture of clay, sand, binder and water. It is a natural building medium, and variations of this mode of building can be found all over the globe. Cob is a wonderful thermal mass. It comprises the oven body, and also acts as a mortar to build the plinth of the oven. The cob oven we will build during this workshop is called a black oven. This means that the firebox and the cooking chamber are the same. Cob is generally safe to work with. Still, this is a hands-on construction workshop requiring on-going (but pleasant) exertion -- we are also working with heavy stones and other materials. We will work slowly and safely to build a beautiful and functional oven. Children age 8 and over will be able to participate in construction. $175.00 is the initial fee during registration. If we register 10 or more, then we will offer a rebate of $25.00 to each participant, thus making the fee $150.00 + GST. Children are welcome with their parents at no cost. Couples must register and pay as individuals. Deadline for registration is July 13th. Full payment is required upon registration. 80% refund if cancelled by Friday, July 20th. No refund if within a week of the workshop. Carpooling from Winnipeg will be easy to accomplish -- we will create a cob oven message board and also communicate through e-mails. Light lunch provided both days. Dress for hot weather. We will have shade available, and remember that this is a hands-on workshop at a relaxed and enjoyable pace. You will be able to walk away feeling comfortable working with the materials, and in all likelihood reproduce a similar or completely different oven!
