Cob is a mixture of clay, sand, binder and water. It is a natural building medium, and variations of this mode of building can be found all over the globe. Cob is a wonderful thermal mass. It comprises the oven body, and also acts as a mortar to build the plinth of the oven. The cob oven we will build during this workshop is called a black oven. This means that the firebox and the cooking chamber are the same.
Cob is generally safe to work with. Still, this is a hands-on construction workshop requiring on-going (but pleasant) exertion -- we are also working with heavy stones and other materials. We will work slowly and safely to build a beautiful and functional oven. Children age 8 and over will be able to participate in construction.
