Hello good permaculture folks!

Please see a message below from Robert Guilford. Many, if not most, of you know Robert either from his connections to the Harvest Moon Society and Festival, the PDC held last year on his farm, his Chickens of the North video/project, or from his MC-ing at Folk Fest.

I've had many discussions with permaculturists where land access is the pith. This is an amazing opportunity to set up on good organic land with like minded folks, steps away from Rock Lake and the valley, in a small rural community where permaculture work is already taking place.

Robert is generously offering partial financing, and a willingness to go through the process of further subdivision and/or alternative legal arrangements to make this happen.

What Robert was too modest (or forgetful) to say is that he also has some amazing knowledge of the local community, farming all types of grains and oilseeds, farming with draft horses, raising cattle, dairy goats, chickens and other livestock, permaculture and farm management. He also has equipment galore, including everything you would need to start working your land, a welding forge, seed/grain cleaning equipment and a tractor which I personally authorize the use of. ;)

Please respond directly to Robert, not on this thread, with your questions or words of encouragement. Robert is very brave to be handling the succession of his 100 year+ family farm in this way, and I hope some of you looking for land make a connection with him.

best to you all!
Carissa

Hello All,

Hope you all had a good time on the weekend even though it wasn't too great
for being out in shorts or sun bathing.  However, it was good for gardening
and cleaning up around the farm yard which has been long overdue.

I wanted to give all of you a heads up that I am considering selling a
portion of the farm to folks interested in small scale farming or some sort
of permaculture project. I've attached a map of the farm showing where the
fields are located and their current approximate boundary's. The idea is to
begin some sort of succession plan that would work towards keeping the land
organic and not have it swallowed up by another farm. As many of you know I
have been trying to figure out ways that would encourage young people to
move out to the Clearwater area and get into some sort of food production or
processing. Perhaps this might work for some of you or perhaps you know of
someone that it might work for that is not on this list. I would really
appreciate your thoughts on how this might work in your mind.

The way it stands now, I own 640 acres in a square section which include
fields 1 - 8 surrounded by the gravel road on all sides. What I am proposing
is to sell 4 eighty acre parcels of land which would include fields 5 - 8.
There are hydro lines all along the north and east side of the section but
no water wells drilled or buildings. Each one of the parcels of land has its
advantages and disadvantages. Field 5 has a lot of planted trees including
Sea Buckthorn, lilac, green ash, poplar, spruce, etc. and access from both
the North and West side. Field 6 has an nice grove of oak trees and access
to the centre of the section which has been kind of a little eco reserve.
Field 7 has a couple of bluffs of willows along with some planted lilac,
larch and spruce along with access to the centre of the section. Field 8
only has a couple of bluffs of willows, but has road access from both the
north and east side as well as hydro lines on those sides. I plan to sell
them as 80 acre parcels, but they could be subdivided should you want to go
together with other folks to make the initial 80 acre purchase.

As far as financing goes, I could probably finance part of the purchase
price, but that would be on a case by case basis.

I would keep ownership of the south half (fields 1-4) and yard site. My plan
for this land is to sell some of the cows and break up some of the land to
grow plots of heritage grains, hemp, vegetables, etc. and probably take on a
couple of interns next year or possibly one this year to help keep things
rolling.

My hope is that the land would remain organic even though it is not
currently certified. It is currently all in grass and could be left in grass
and I can harvest the hay off of it or you could buy some critters to eat
the hay or break it up and sow crops or gardens of some sort. It is a
clay/loam soil which varies depending on the hills.

At any rate, I just wanted to give you folks first opportunity to consider
such an investment and we'll see what we can do to make it work.

From the farm,

Robert
