Is the News-Advocate just doing bad reporting, having missed this story (I mean, c'mon, there are surely Republicans on staff that got wind of this, or even attended the meeting) or did they bury it on purpose?

This might be a great opportunity for a "concerned citizen" to write a letter to the editor at the News Advocate condemning political violence & dangerous rhetoric & referencing the article in Michigan Advance. I'm currently ineligible as I had a recent letter.

For anyone on this email thread that is questioning the authenticity of the original document in question, please ACTUALLY read the Michigan Advance article. 

The chair of the Manistee Republican County Party was interviewed by the reporter and explained and confirmed that this was a real document passed out at their meeting. There is zero need to question Janet Stancliff’s integrity as she is a hero for putting herself in print to bring this horrendous issue to light for our community! Jon King is a veteran reporter who investigated this story and would not have published it, if he didn’t properly vet the story and interview everyone involved. Just because someone doesn’t like the story does not make it fake news nor should we question those who were brave enough to come forward.

Thanks for responding Janet.  I see a lot of claims on the internet but most are bull shi*, whether from a conservative or liberal point of view.  Since I grew up in Manistee and know a lot of people on the listserver, I figured that it would be a good way to verify what happened.  I live in Marquette now, but they allow me on the Manistee Dem group because they named the annual award dinner after my dad, Don Jennings.  If you make it to the next dinner (I think that it is in September or October), look me up.  I would love to meet you.

p.s. I also read that the new mayor of New York City is going to force school students to use Arabic numerals in math class.  We will have to wait and see how much truth there is to this.

Seriously?  We are supposed to believe everything that we see on the internet just because it is in some news organization that appears to have a liberal bias?  I am sure that Janet Stancliff is a delightful person and, after reading her email to me, I am sure that what was in the article was true and that she did get a copy of the position paper.   (also, someone posted a picture of the guy who wrote the position paper and he looks like the type of person who would do that).  However, I disagree that there is "zero need to [anyone's] integrity" when it comes to these things.  The reason that I made my original posting asking if anyone knew Janet and had seen the document is because I grew up in Manistee and I know several people on this group who could verify the story.  However, I think that we have a duty to remain skeptical and "Question Authority" (as the old bumpersticker used to say), especially in this day and age.

After all, the Onion is a respectable media organization, but do you really believe that the White House has classified Nursing as a hobby?

Pat Jennings is correct.  Very literally, ~40% of what is on social media sites are not accurate factual content, and up to 90% is misleading.  Basically people who get their news from social media are not informed.  Not even close.

It is a lot more work these days to vet an accurate reporting news source.  But it helps to understand this, and use these two resources:  If a source has bias is not that important.  First, all sources have bias.  Second, bias is easy to detect, and most people can easily account for it, often subconsciously.  But it is much harder to recognise lack of credibility and accurate reporting.  So that is the rating that is important.

Did you even take the time to read the article, Kurt?   Obviously not, or you would have read where the Manistee County Republican chairman, Duane Jones, admitted that it was true, that this handout was made and given to the Manistee county republicans who were at the meeting.
