In the past week, Donald the Dumber has ordered our troops to attack US citizens for exercising their constitutionally protected right to protest. He has lied about and disparaged the second largest city in the country that he's president of, calling Los Angeles trash and lawless, and suggested that anyone who disagrees with his immigration policies deserves to be met with all the violence his administration can muster.

Now I see Manistee people posting on Facebook that the No Kings protests happening from coast to coast are being sponsored by the Chinese Communist Party and other nefarious actors instead of the truth -- that regular people like you and I are disgusted and want to take action.

There will be a sign making workshop this Thursday evening at 6:30pm to prepare for the rally. It will be led by Ellen Somsel in the Onekama Village Park gazebo. Bring poster board, markers and other tools needed.

On Saturday, we will gather on First Street and US 31 from 4:30-5:30pm for the rally. Bring your signs and your righteous anger! We hear we'll be joined by members of the Oceana, Mason, Benzie County Dems. Let's make a BIG fuss to show our community we are NOT OK with an authoritarian regime in the White House. The rally will be followed by a celebration in the city park next to our office, located at 319 River St and not the address listed on the flyer above.

See you on Saturday!

CALLING ALL DEMS! We need people to step up and serve on local boards and run for City Council. Contact Peggy Raddatz at peg.r...@gmail.com for more information.
Congratulations to Glenn Lottie Scholarship Recipient Cory Cameron

The winner of the 2025 Glenn Lottie Scholarship is Cory Cameron, a senior inn the Kaleva Norman Dickson Schools. The $2,000 Glenn Lottie Scholarship is awarded to a student entering a program for the skilled trades. This scholarship is sponsored by the Blue Tigers, which is the community outreach sector of the Manistee County Democratic Party.

In Cory’s junior year of high school, he also started at the Cadillac Career Tech Center in the Heavy Equipment Class, which had some welding in it, which is his first love. After his junior year, he was asked if he would like to participate in an 8 week course for welding. He excitedly said “Yes.” This course was offered through the Career Tech Center and MI WORKS and allowed Cory to earn two certifications from the State of MI in welding.

His English Teacher, Lacey Veith, said, “Cory might struggle with day to day classwork, but he excels when it comes to his chosen future career. He has shown this in his tme at the Career Tech Center’s program where he was often recognized for his accomplishments, even earning Student of the Quarter.

Angela Peters, who is an aunt to Cory and also the Supervisor of Special Education Manistee ISD, spoke highly of Cory. She says, “ Cory has consistently demonstrated a passion for welding and a strong desire to master the practical skills necessary for a successful career. Whether though his course work and practical experiences, he has proven to be a fast learner, a critical thinker, and someone who approaches every challenge with determination and professionalism.”

Julie McCollum, a neighbor, has known Cory for the past seven years and says, “I have watched him grow up into a very kind and respectful young man.” Ms. McCollum also states that “Cory spends a lot of time with his family, he is a great friend to his peers and is also involved with his local Fire Department in Dickson Township as a Cadet.

Cory has been accepted at Lincoln Technology College, or Lincoln Tech, in Indianapolis, IN. He starts his welding class on July 1. Congratulations to Cory Cameron. You are a well deserved recipient for the Glenn Lottie Scholarship. This scholarship is sponsored by the Blue Tigers, the community outreach sector of the Manistee County Democratic Party.

 Consider running for local office

If you haven’t before, take a moment to consider running for an elected office.  Manistee County needs more citizens involved in local government.  We also need younger, more diverse voices to serve on township and county boards.  Everyone over 18 years old and a resident of their county and township is eligible.

If you are interested in running for any township or county office and would like to find out how to do so, please contact Judy Cunningham at 231-794-0005 or jpc...@gmail.com.

Contest Every Race

The greatest change is often created at the local level, but we need to be on the ballot. The Manistee County Democratic Party is in partnership with the Rural Power Lab, whose “Contest Every Race” supports county parties to set goals for recruiting and training candidates for local races.  Our goal is to make sure every race is contested with a Democratic candidate. Contact John Helge for more information: johnm...@gmail.com.

Membership in the Manistee County Democratic Party is always free to those who don't have room in their budget, but if you can spare a few dollars, the money will be spent responsibly (and mostly locally) to advance Democratic priorities, policies, and candidates.

If you can find the means to upgrade your membership level, you will help us hit our goal of increasing Democratic representation in local, state, and national government. Click on the ink below to upgrade your membership.
