So, do you actually believe we are stupid enough to believe everything we read on social media? Did you stop to think that many of us are familiar with this reporter and know him to a reliable source for information? Did you stop to consider that we don’t believe everything we read?

We are supposed to believe everything that we see on the internet just because it is in some news organization that appears to have a liberal bias? I am sure that Janet Stancliff is a delightful person and, after reading her email to me, I am sure that what was in the article was true and that she did get a copy of the position paper. (also, someone posted a picture of the guy who wrote the position paper and he looks like the type of person who would do that). However, I disagree that there is "zero need to [anyone's] integrity" when it comes to these things. The reason that I made my original posting asking if anyone knew Janet and had seen the document is because I grew up in Manistee and I know several people on this group who could verify the story. However, I think that we have a duty to remain skeptical and "Question Authority" (as the old bumpersticker used to say), especially in this day and age.
After all, the Onion is a respectable media organization, but do you really believe that the White House has classified Nursing as a hobby?

So if someone posts something and feel it is accurate, personally know the source, (because they already did the due diligence and fact checked it or knows the source, those actions are good)
But then if someone else reads it and wants to do due diligence and question it, or double check it -- then that is bad?

I just have to bring up two points Pat.
1. Nursing was not classified as a hobby but it was removed from the list of professional graduate degrees. Meaning a student who wants to pursue a more specialized nursing degree or a masters or doctorate in nursing do not get the same higher level of possible federal student loans that say an MD, or DDS would get. They are limited to the new cap on undergrad loans. They will likely need private loans to get that degree so likely there will be a decrease in nurses going on to higher education… which we need.
2. The Arabic numerals are 0,1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9- so yes we already learn them in elementary school. Pairing the term Arabic numerals for the digits with Mandani’s name is only meant to stoke fear.

Manisteeans: I have received a lot of emails regarding my
earlier posting. Some people were concerned that I did not know
what Arabic numerals are. I am a graduate of Manistee Catholic
Central and the nuns made sure that we knew what Arabic numerals
were.
However, the ps was a tongue in cheek comment. I am not sure if
people actually complained about their kids learning about Arabic
numerals though, but, I would not be surprised. (Just wait until
they find about al-gebra!)
The rest of the post was sincere. I agree with Kurt that we
should be skeptical and check the source, which I have done by
posting to this group. And you convinced me that what was posted
in the Michigan Advance is accurate.
Prior to the 11th Century, most commerce was done using something similar to Roman numbers. This, of course, is very confusing as anyone who wants to know which Super Bowl the Lions came close to going to can attest. The problem was that there was no concept of a symbol for 'nothing'. Ancient Hindu Indians developed a mathematics with a symbol for zero (or 'nothing') and the Arabs developed a system in which there is a different symbol for each number of fingers (i.e. 0,1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9) and the placement of these numerals in a number determines the value (i.e one place, tens place, hundreds, etc.) Hence, they are called Arabic numerals.
I got this information from Wikipedia and I have a Masters in Mathematics. However, I encourage you to be skeptical.

When the next Protest March at 1st and US-31 comes (not that I am all
excited for it, its getting to be like the movie "Groundhog Day"), I
propose that people dress however they like to show diversity, like good
Democrats, but with one exception: everyone carries the same sign to
show SOLIDARITY. I propose that sign read either "IMPEACH PETE
HEGSETH" or "END CITIZENS UNITED"
I think that might send a useful message and get the attention of fence
sitters, without looking like the "same old, same old" everyone comes to
expect... my 2 cents - Chris Riley

I for one, am extremely thankful for Arabic numerals. I mean, can you imagine doing algebra with Roman numerals? It would be so confusing. And amount of work it would take to find the value of X. Oh wait, that would always be easy: X is always ten. Now that I think about it I wish algebra was with Roman numerals--would have done so much better. As you can now tell, I do not have a masters in math. ![]()

Pat, I guess we have to be careful in using satire and irony, even with Democrats (it is totally lost on Republicans). Your little bit you added about arabic numerals had me in stitches (uh oh, I guess I better explain. I wasn't really being sewn up.. oh I give up.) To a person with some understanding of irony this was obviously a joke, and a very funny one indeed. But a sizeable part of the population simply does not get this kind of humor. I’d rather hear about Senator Kelly and Senator Slotkin and the four representatives who have in my opinion, put their very lives in danger by saying
what we all should know:
YOU DO NOT HAVE TO FOLLOW ORDERS THAT ARE UNCONSTITUTIONAL.
If we have forgotten that, perhaps we could look back into the Nuremberg Ttials.
Of course, down through history many of us have ,
because we were” told to do so”, done
Not only unconstitutional things but despicable things.
I want the Democrats of the future to focus on education, healthcare,
the environment…
I want the Democrats of the future to know that every single human being on the planet deserves
decent housing, adequate food, and clothing, and truly the
Right to “life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.”
