We are supposed to believe everything that we see on the internet just because it is in some news organization that appears to have a liberal bias? I am sure that Janet Stancliff is a delightful person and, after reading her email to me, I am sure that what was in the article was true and that she did get a copy of the position paper. (also, someone posted a picture of the guy who wrote the position paper and he looks like the type of person who would do that). However, I disagree that there is "zero need to [anyone's] integrity" when it comes to these things. The reason that I made my original posting asking if anyone knew Janet and had seen the document is because I grew up in Manistee and I know several people on this group who could verify the story. However, I think that we have a duty to remain skeptical and "Question Authority" (as the old bumpersticker used to say), especially in this day and age.
After all, the Onion is a respectable media organization, but do you really believe that the White House has classified Nursing as a hobby?

The chair of the Manistee Republican County Party was interviewed by the reporter and explained and confirmed that this was a real document passed out at their meeting. There is zero need to question Janet Stancliff’s integrity as she is a hero for putting herself in print to bring this horrendous issue to light for our community! Jon King is a veteran reporter who investigated this story and would not have published it, if he didn’t properly vet the story and interview everyone involved. Just because someone doesn’t like the story does not make it fake news nor should we question those who were brave enough to come forward.--

Manisteeans: I have received a lot of emails regarding my
earlier posting. Some people were concerned that I did not know
what Arabic numerals are. I am a graduate of Manistee Catholic
Central and the nuns made sure that we knew what Arabic numerals
were.
However, the ps was a tongue in cheek comment. I am not sure if
people actually complained about their kids learning about Arabic
numerals though, but, I would not be surprised. (Just wait until
they find about al-gebra!)
The rest of the post was sincere. I agree with Kurt that we
should be skeptical and check the source, which I have done by
posting to this group. And you convinced me that what was posted
in the Michigan Advance is accurate.
Prior to the 11th Century, most commerce was done using something similar to Roman numbers. This, of course, is very confusing as anyone who wants to know which Super Bowl the Lions came close to going to can attest. The problem was that there was no concept of a symbol for 'nothing'. Ancient Hindu Indians developed a mathematics with a symbol for zero (or 'nothing') and the Arabs developed a system in which there is a different symbol for each number of fingers (i.e. 0,1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9) and the placement of these numerals in a number determines the value (i.e one place, tens place, hundreds, etc.) Hence, they are called Arabic numerals.
I got this information from Wikipedia and I have a Masters in Mathematics. However, I encourage you to be skeptical.
