Just try to reinstall it and use install.packages() rather than
update.packages(). If you try to update a package when it's on the
search path, that message will appear fairly regularly (at least on
Windows); sometimes the problem just occurs randomly. I find if I'm
updating a fairly large number of packages (say 50, for example), the
problem will arise at least once or twice. My approach is to just keep
installing a package until it works, using a fresh R session with no
contributed packages loaded.
This problem arises on Windows systems; I've never gotten it in Linux.
I don't have a Mac, so I can't comment on what happens there. It's
annoying, but it's also fairly easy to rectify.
