Hi all,

When I went out around 8pm yesterday (Thursday), I saw a small fire burning in the parking area behind the bins. I could hear voices by the fire, so I’m guessing it was lit by the people who sometimes sleep there, likely just trying to get some warmth.

I wanted to raise this with the group, given that my weather app has repeatedly been flagging an elevated fire risk in the county this week. I know very little about fires, weather, and city policy on support to unhoused residents, and it may well be that the risk is considered low, given the proximity of the firehouse. Defer to those of you who have lived in Durham and in the building for much longer than I have, but wanted to flag here.

Thanks,
Maaza

They did this at least once before and I called 911 and asked for the HEART team to come out. 911 also dispatched the fire dept (LOL sigh well they’re only a block away).

Once there were like 5 city professionals in the parking lot, I went back inside because I don’t really want to directly present the face of the residents as the bad guys in this situation.

I totally agree that the last thing we need is a brush fire in the lot behind the building :(

I’m going to have to email the city, since the HEART team didn’t seem to make any progress.
