What if the worst happens and all the data is lost? This means, that
the manent database on the local storage is also lost.

What are the steps to restore the data from the remote encrypted
backup? And, do I have to have an up to date backup of the local
database somewhere?

Sorry, if this has been answered somewhere, but at least I could not
find any FAQ or documentation for this software.

The only thing that would prevent you from recovering your data is
your encryption key (hey, there's no backdoor - if you lose it, you
lose it).

If you have the encryption key, you just create a new backup, specify
the same location you have used for storage, and it will automatically
scan the files there. The process is reasonably fast, it reads only
the headers, and the headers are compacted into large containers.
Then you're back to square one - you can continue backing up or you
can restore.

In fact, my laptop's hard disk has died recently, and I tried
restoring my home dir from Manent using the procedure above. It worked.

That's very nice to know that Manent has been tested in real world
scenario :)

This answered my question and gave me confidence to give Manent a
spin. Thank you.

I still wouldn't trust it as a sole backup solution just yet, but it's a nice addition and will be good enough at some point.
That said, I trust it with my data.
