THE INDIAN CLASSICAL INSTRUMENTS:

GHATAM: The Ghatam is one of the most ancient percussion instruments of South India. It is a clay pot with narrow mouth. From the mouth, it slants outwards to form a ridge. Made mainly of clay backed with brass or copper filings with a small amount of iron filings, the pitch of the Ghatam varies according to its size.

KONNAKOL: Konnakol is the art of performing percussion syllables vocally in South Indian music, the Carnatic music (South Indian classical) performance art of vocal percussion. Konnakol is the combination of Konnakol syllables spoken while simultaneously counting the tala (meter) with the hand. It is comparable in some respects to Bol in Hindustani music, but allows the composition, performance or communication of rhythms.  Many musicians from a variety of traditions around the world have found Konnakol useful in their own musical practice. Prominent western musicians including John McLaughlin, who led the Mahavishnu Orchestra have long used Konnakol as an aid to composing.

KANJIRA: The Kanjira, the South Indian frame drum, is an instrument of the tambourine family. As a folk and bhajan instrument, it has been used for many centuries. Similar to the Western tambourine, it consists of a circular frame made of the wood of the jackfruit tree, between 7 and 9 inches in width and 2 to 4 inches in depth. It is covered on one side with a drumhead made of monitor lizard skin, while the other side is left open. It was modified to a frame drum with a single pair of jingles in the 1880s, who is credited with bringing the instrument to the classical stage. It is used primarily in concerts of Carnatic music (South Indian classical music) as a supporting percussion instrument.

THAVIL: The Thavil is a barrel (drum) shaped heavy hand percussion instrument from Tamil Nadu. It is used in temple, folk and Carnatic music. The Thavil is an essential component of traditional festivals and ceremonies in South India.  The Thavil consists of a cylindrical shell hollowed out of a solid block of jackfruit wood. Layers of animal skin (water buffalo on the right, goat on the left) are stretched across the two sides of the shell using hemp hoops attached to the shell.
