Okay, I've chased this up a tree, I think. I set up control burst like
Killing joke specified. However, the burst app does not seem to save
settings for the second mandala, which should be on channel two,
right? So, if Im using control burst, I don't need to mess with the
virtual brain at all? Now an issue with battery. I'm having problems
with the presets, loading them, that is. I go to load one, it comes up
missing, so I cilick browse, and I can't find it, do I have to put the
folder somewhere specific? Also, a lesser problem, I have to go back
into battery and turn the mandalas back on sometimes, I'm not sure why
it happens but it's the least of my problems. I guess the main thing
is to learn how to use the presets. Could someone from synesthesia
post a comprehensive tutorial on this? The posts are great, but
fragmented. ...back to work

have you read the readme file that was in your downloaded mandala
battery folder? it tells you that when you load a preset the audio
files will come up as 'missing' so just choose 'browse' and direct it
toward the folder called 'Battery 3 Library' and you'll be fine. it's
just a matter of pointing battery at the audio files it wants, and
they're all in a several GB sized folder called 'Battery 3 Library'
that installed with battery.

sounds like you are learning 2 separate things at once. focus on
battery.

also, all the mandala battery presets are made for a single mandala
and no virtual brain is necessary. you'll probably get yourself into
a corner if you start by hitting battery with 2 pads. get familiar
with using just one at first.

Yes, I read the file. I guess I thought these presets were separate files..so they are basically templates, and the sound files are in the battery 3 library..alrighty then.

Ok, that worked, but I do have two drums, what are suggestions for that? What I want to play requires two drums, at least.

You could connect and set up each drum one at at time, so there's no
chance for control burst or the vb to mess up already finished
configurations.

- connect the pad you want to configure
- use control burst to set it up
- disconnect the drum
- close control burst
- connect the next pad and repeat (with the next midi channel)

If you use only battery to play and not the vb, be sure to avoid
starting the virtual brain at all, because it might mess up the
multipad configuration and you'd have to start all over again.

you can do it that way (disconnect one at a time) or just make sure
you properly change the settings for each device in control burst as
you set up each pad and then disconnect them all at once (PC only, Mac
requires no disconnection) and quit control burst.

either way you'll need to understand how to use battery. cells can
either be hit by all midi channels (omni) or by any individual
channel. your mandalas should be set to different channels and
relevant cells need to be set to one channel or the other so you only
trigger what you want to. it's basic midi stuff, but it's best to
understand the concept before diving in.

Yes, I got that far with battery. What is the difference between control burst and control burst exp? Should I not be using exp? It seems to work.

just plain control burst gives you no control of how the mandala will
be set up. it pumps a configuration into your pad which is exactly
the way it should be for the mandala battery 3 presets that the
company made. control burst exp is more advanced and lets users set
the pad any way they want for any program. there's a good explanation
of all that in the mandala user manual.
