Hi,

I need help with transferring my existing created DIVI website to another hosting provider, as well as the revamping of the website and branding thereafter.

If you think you can help, or know anyone please provide details separately.

Thank you

Asif

This should be pretty straight forward and I'd say the easiest way to do it would be

- setup your account at the new hosting company
- take a full backup of your existing site, depending on how big it is the easiest way is probably to use this plugin - https://wordpress.org/plugins/all-in-one-wp-migration/ if the site is bigger than the free limit then you might have to buy the unlimited version but it's only $69 - https://servmask.com/products/unlimited-extension and I've used that on sites upto 4GB without any problems (although I usually FTP the .wpress backup file to the plugin folder directly instead of using the import and then restore it for larger sites)
- create the domain on the new hosting company
- point the nameservers / A record at it  *** if you have an email associated with the domain on the existing hosting then you'll need to move those too or if you are using external email providers be sure to setup any custom DNS on the new hosting.
- install WP on the new site on the new server
- use WP migrate to restore it there

As for the revamp, Divi is really easy to use so unless you have a compelling reason to move away from it I'd stick with it.  If you do want to move away from it then it will be a bit more painful as, like many page builders, I believe it embeds a lot of the markup directly into the content so if you switch themes you'll see all sorts shortcodes output in your content, I haven't had to clean these up on bigger sites but something along the lines of this might help - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tiH3oWli2Ek and I'm sure there are plenty of other options.

Hope that helps get you started,

Thanks

Andrew

Hi,

Thanks Andrew, I will try this weekend and if you can email separately that would be much appreciated as might need further help. Understand if this not possible and anyone else who can help please do, if you are on peopleperhour do let me know. Hard to find the right people and trust.

Also, what is the best, or should I say most suitable hosting provider for DIVI? Someone recently told my it is Ionos - can anyone confirm this? They also mentioned steer clear from godaddy as experienced issues.

There is one called namecheap.com  but  I guess I one with is low cost but runs well for Divi. And if hosting more than one website. Just realised I have two websites, the others is my sisters I created which I did take a backup of but unsure if it's the right type of back up when needing to transfer....again will check on the weekend.

Hi Mike,
I remember you mention Divi isa good option and if you know anyone local north west based that works with Divi websites then that would be of great help.

Thanks
Asif

Morning,

We previously used Divi for our membership site but then moved away to Astra as the block editor was available as standard. We hosted on WPX (and continue to do so with the new site) and experience was pretty good. Their 24/7 live chat is really good and can help with some smaller technical things which I’ve found other providers (SiteGround) usually refer you to articles they find in Google, and blame you for using more than 5 plugins…

Changing the pages away from Divi was a nightmare as Andrew mentions, Divi uses its own markup language and pretty much nothing other than the core text moved over. As such it was a job to recreate things but once done it was worth it.

As such we chose to move everything over to Astra due to the block builder / Gutenberg as standard.

But, I absolutely do NOT recommend Divi. I never have. If you can spare the effort to move away from it, please do so. The same goes for the likes of WP-Bakery/Visual Composer or whatever it is called now. All of the shortcode based page builders are hugely problematic. Steer clear if you can.

Block editor (Gutenberg) -based sites are the better way to go. Full site editing is coming soon-ish. But in the meantime, themes like Astra allow you to have full control of he whole canvas if you need to build your pages like that. And if you really can't build your site with blocks (though there seem to be 100's of block plugins now), go with something like Elementor.

Stay safe and healthy, best regards,

Mike

Thanks you very much for the input Steve.

I am currently with Siteground and their service has changed over the years and you are right in them referring you to articles.

I am stuck on two counts 1. whether to stay with Divi, I.e. renew my membership plan with them or go with a new theme, 2. Which hosting provider to use I.e. move away from Siteground.

The problem I am having also, is it worth creating the website in a different wordpress theme?
Even though the current website in Divi is 70% already there in terms of website completion. The problem is I need help in finalising the website in terms of creation and branding as I have a day job and other stuff...and sitting at a computer late nights/early hours is exhausting me. Hence a new theme may take a lot of rework if someone else takes on which there lies additional costs.

Again if you know of anyone or can point me in the right direction on these two points that would be much appreciated.

Thanks
Asif

Hi Asif and thank you for letting me until the group Mike,

I've heard great things about your WordPress background Mike, but never got a chance to meet you while I was working for the business growth hub.

I build and optimise websites using WordPress and predominantly Divi so that my clients can manage them easily themselves. I work with a lot of non tech sectors and they just want to be able to see what they're changing which Divi does very well.

In terms of optimisation, I have had some pretty good results recently via my own hosting platform (Virtualmin on a 3vCPU with Vultr and dev server on a Ryzen Hetzner dedi) and extensive research into the best combination of optimisation plugins.

Recent Divi builds and optimisation success are with HtE Recruitment which I completed last month.
Another example of a bespoke layout is Amsy, which I also completed last month, which loads pretty quickly, even with a background video.
https:// amsy.co.uk/

I'd be happy to take a look if you are interested in finding A Divi specialist.

Hi Andrew,

The first step is done - I have managed to download my Website data from Siteground which consists of 'Files (File Manager) and a Database (MySQL)' - they changed from cpanel to 'Site Tools' 2 months ago and just discovered! Thank you for your response.

Hi All,

Couple of questions:

  1. Can anyone recommend an alternative good hosting provider than Siteground? If you say stick with Siteground that is ok. My deadline is 16th May to renew. I checked WPX and they are the same price if not more. Has anyone had experience with Bluehost?
  2. Does Astra/Divi or any other theme work well/better with Bluehost than Siteground, because someone told me Ionos is best for Divi which then leads me to think certain themes are more compatible with certain hosting providers? This does not mean I want to stay with Divi, just something I used years ago when creating my website but Astra seems to be a preferred choice from reviews and I need to research this Block editor (gutenburg) thing!

Thanks

Asif

Hi Mike,

Thanks for your reply and had a look into Astra - it comes on top!

https://www.wpbeginner.com/showcase/best-wordpress-multi-purpose-themes/

I will look further into how much work/cost it will be to move away from Divi built website to Astra (they do offer a migration for free but I do not know what that includes entirely). Thanks for the heads up.

Also, do you know when there will be training at Madlab again for the refresher WordPress course and then others?

Thanks
Asif

Great. I've used it a few times now.

One thing I forgot to mention in response to questions about hosting: in my experience (both directly and through others) Ionos (used to be 1and1) are not good for anything! Seriously, I've heard nothing good about them, especially when it comes to WordPress sites. Remarkably, I went to look at their home page it is currently throwing a 500 error!😃

I'm going to mention 34SP as a good hosting company. Their WordPress hosting is container-based so much better than conventional shared hosting, and well optimised for WordPress. Plus, they will keep WordPress and your plugins upgraded for you.
They don't have CPanel, Plesk or any of that nonsense, but you don't need it either. Instead they have a simple panel that just handles the things you need (including creating and managing a staging site).

I have been hosting sites for customers on my own 'VPS' servers for more than 10 years, they don't get a control panel, and I don't use one myself.

Also, do you know when there will be training at Madlab again for the refresher WordPress course and then others?

I have no plans at the moment for running in-person WordPress classes. They wouldn't be at Madlab anyway, as it no longer has a physical presence.

Honestly, I don't see it happening before the end of this year. I keep meaning to run some online training but that hasn't happened yet!

Hi Asif,

OK, hopefully that will be OK although it will be a lot more work for you than if you were to use the plugin I recommended or something similar like Duplicator - unless it's a large site I'd definitely recommend you use one of those as it will make the transfer much easier and save you having to do it manually - not that that isn't a worthwhile exercise to deepen your understanding but it will take you more time and probably trial and error unless you've done similar things before.

On hosting I've heard a lot of good things about https://www.20i.com/ and am planning on doing some testing with them soon.

Regards

Andrew

I can't say a anything about Divi but for hosting I can recommend 34sp who are here in Manchester. I just moved 2 sites to them and they dealt with migration for me. I haven't had to ask for any other support but I like that I can email them. The hardest bit of the move was cancelling my previous hosting!

Hi Mike,

I know exactly what you mean about Ionos.... let's not go there 🙂

I am looking at 34SP right now....impressive the reviews....for anyone else reading this, here are the google reviews - 5 stars - and click on 'downtime' which is a key thing and its zilch more or less! https://www.google.com/maps/place/34SP.com/@53.4837071,-2.2392898,17z/data=!4m7!3m6!1s0x0:0xb7bb19899b4ce8c6!8m2!3d53.4836436!4d-2.2371358!9m1!1b1

Will give them a call tomorrow.

Thanks
Asif

Glad you recommended 34SP hosting too - Manchester is my home town and would actually feel better partnering with a local UK business than the large enterprise cash cows!

Hi All,

Just an update to say I am now hosting my website with 34SP.com and they helped with the transfer, and speak to (local) people! The process was not as simple as I thought but I learnt quite a few things along the way so it all helps in building up my tech knowledge. The only thing is they have only the UK server and datacentres overseas, and therefore no CDN offered (excuse the jargon error and feel free to correct me 🙂) - so when people overseas visit my website, it all comes back to loading speed of the website/theme. That said, the UK market is my primary target market initially and take it from there.

Thank you to everyone who gave their input and advice on hosting providers.

Thanks
Asif

Hi Asif,

Once you're set up on Cloudflare and have a decent set of optimisation plugins with CDNs on the site you'll still be in a pretty good place in terms of speed overseas for now.

Beauty of WordPress is that it's pretty easy to move onto bigger, better and more highly available hosting platforms as you grow and have more budget to spend.

Hope this helps you confirm things are moving in the right direction for your site.

Thanks,

Doug
