I use lcn.com (Low Cost Names). The name sounds a bit low rent but the admin side is very easy to use and highly configurable.
Prices are good for domains and you can do useful things like set up auto renewing and so on.

My dev buddy and i have used a company based in coventry area called unlimitedwebhosting.co.uk for a while. They answer the phone and respond sharpish to support tickets. This we find far outwieghs cost savings on "free" etc. And you can get a domain and hosting for about £40 pa. Its slightly simpler to have both domain and hosting with same provider from setup and contracts point of view but not essential.
.net magazine has a pdf download comparing hosting providers. Piles of data but little insight. Keep mining your contacts etc for recommendations based on experience, good and bad. Also hosters often provide "one-click" installs of common opensource stuff inc. Wordpress. Try calling their **support** departments and see how responsive they are on this.
Finally , the GoDaddy dashboard for managing stuff (aka "Control Panel") - its confusing and mostly about selling you more stuff - i am advising you against GoDaddy for sure.
Best,
Phil
