Hi All,
A new request/advice.
Like many of you, I have a growing number of websites I have to log into and remembers all the passwords is too much, so much that I have a spreadsheet!

Hi Mike L,
I believe you use a password manager from a company/software tool as I think I recall you mentioning it in the WordPress training many years ago? I may be wrong!

Thanks
Asif

I use Lastpass myself but Bitwarden is highly recommended:

Hi Asif,

I used to use and recommend LastPass. It is still good, but not my preferred solution now. The LastPass interface is clunky and the browser add-on can behave oddly. In particular, I also understand the free option no longer works on mobile. Note: I would always recommend paying for a tool like a password manager. Prices are not too expensive* (about £31 per year https://www.lastpass.com/pricing)

My current password manager of choice is 1Password. I'm really happy with is since I switched and love having it on all my devices. They do a free trial, but don't have a free forever option. Again it is only* $36 per year.

Others are available including some open source ones.

Whichever you choose, stick with it and get ALL your passwords in it. I also recommend using 2 Factor authentication whenever possible. I use Authy -- another paid option but it will sync across devices and if you change/lose your phone it saves days of setting everything up again.

* I understand that these prices are expensive for some. But remember that if you are not paying them, they have no obligation to continue providing the service, fix bugs or support you in any way. This goes for email, social media, and security.

Thanks Mike - I get your point about paying for the ongoing support, and the two-factor authentication seems to becoming the norm! The key thing for me is social media and security (including WordPress log-ins and everything that goes with the website), but when you take into account personal/shopping activity log-ins then the number of passwords to remember is not feasible and you cannot use the same for each one. Will look into Authy.

Thanks
Asif

Two factor is pretty much essential these days, especially for social media as is seems to be a huge target. Multiple people I follow on SM were 'hacked' (their words) just last week! I'm pretty sure that every case was a guessed or re-used password that had been compromised elsewhere. None would have happened with 2FA (as long as it is not SMS-based 2FA).

I know what you mean about the sheer number of passwords. I have 1400 items in 1Password (that's after removing almost 800 when I imported from LastPass). I have about 80 2F items stored in Authy. On top of that I have a few accounts using a hardware Yubikey where I can.

These days, security is everything!

This weekend my wordpress.com site wouldnt edit and went into blocks mode complete with error message. Did I click something wrong or was there a wordpress.com fault? Seems to have sorted itself now.

Guy,
I'm not sure why you replied to this thread about password managers, but anyway...

I think WordPress.com moved over to the block editor by default some time ago (at least a few months). Some references:

Thanks for the update Mike. I've been a happy user of LastPass since you recommended it to me years ago. I'll definitely check out 1password. Thank you!
