Obviously i have made a proper mess, I can't even access the dashboard at tamesidepilates.com. I'm not sure what to do next.

This was my first membership set up, should I reach out to memberpress or ask my host to help?  Anything I can do to help myself?

Thank you for any advice
Julieanne.

Hi Julieanne,

Are you saying that, if you go to:
https://www.tamesidepilates.com/wp-login.php
that you still can't log in?

It sounds to me like you made a memberpress rule that covers pages you
didn't intend to. But obviously to fix is you'll need to be able to log
in.

What is your hosting company?

I'd be glad to compare notes on using MemberPress, once you can get in!

well, interesting, a miracle seems to have happened because now I am no longer forbidden, I was forbidden everywhere inc wp-admin

I did send a support message to Fasthosts, maybe they have already intervened.  I will let you know what they say to me and will definitely appreciate some hand-holding if it is needed.

thank you Mike.

That's great. Glad you got in.

I'm very happy to trade info with other MemberPress users. I wish I
knew more of them. Just let me know.

I’d be interested to hear opinions on Memberpress. Currently using Restrict Content Pro (now taken over by ithemes) but finding some restrictions are a bit of a pain!

Currently have a site with 400+ paying and 1400 free members - but finding RCP a little inflexible with some bits.

@Julieanne - sorry to hijack and pleased you’re back in. Did you find out what the issue was?

Steve

Well, the reply from Fasthosts suggests they didn't do anything to ‘fix’ my site, I can now see everything inc wp-admin but is loading very slowly.

But now this: “An error occurred. Spent ages with the circle going round. Didn’t like my credit card and told me not to submit again as I might be double charged 😬. Strange, but it left the last four digits of my credit card in the box, rather than the full 16”

Two people said the same thing, any suggestions very welcome!

Julieanne,

First question:

Is access to the site working as expeced now, and can you give me some
idea how the memberpress access rules are set up?

Second question:

Are you getting an email with the following subject line to your admin
address?

Subject: [MemberPress] IMPORTANT: Checkout error

Third question:

I just tried to sign up (I could only find a free membership). I ended
up getting a "504 Gateway Time-out" on my end. This was right around
12:50 UK time I believe (just before I'm sending this email). Do you
see any result of the attempted sign-up on your end?

Hello

This is the membership I am trying to figure out: https://www.tamesidepilates.com/register/prime/

1) Still loading slowly from the back end (but seems ok otherwise) a few people saw this

:An error occurred, please DO NOT submit the form again as you may be double charged. Please contact us for further assistance instead.

Some people did manage to sign up.

This is a screenshot of the rule for this:
Screen Shot 2020-09-29 at 15.15.40.png

2) I got one "[MemberPress] IMPORTANT: Checkout error" this morning and then the same person did manage to sign up.  These are the details:

Customer User Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Linux; Android 10; SM-A202F Build/QP1A.190711.020; wv) AppleWebKit/537.36 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/4.0 Chrome/85.0.4183.127 Mobile Safari/537.36 [FB_IAB/FB4A;FBAV/289.0.0.40.121;]
Date (UTC): 2020-09-29 07:26:02
INVALID SERVER RESPONSE
textStatus:
string(5) "error"
errorThrown:
string(16) "Gateway Time-out"
jqXHR.status (200 expected):
int(504)
jqXHR.statusText (OK expected):
string(16) "Gateway Time-out"
jqXHR.responseText (JSON object expected):
string(569) "<html>
<head><title>504 Gateway Time-out</title></head>
<body>
<center><h1>504 Gateway Time-out</h1></center>
<hr><center>nginx/1.17.9</center>
</body>
</html>

3) No, nothing for that and super annoying because that free membership was working ok!

I did pay someone to see this up for me, I *really* wanted to be able to add new memberships and manage it myself but I feel defeated and want to just get the freelancer to do it for me.  I just want to teach Pilates and make the odd web on twenty twelve LOL!

Any opinions welcome!

Hi Julieanne,

I think the biggest problem is that the server is incredibly slow. I just tried loading the prime page you linked and it took more than 1 minute for the page to be returned! And that was before the images, JavaScript and CSS started loading. In fact all those other parts were quite fast. This tells me pretty much guaranteed that your server is overloaded. Or having some other kind of issue.

When a server is going that slow, all kinds of things are going to go wrong. Hence your visitors are seeing the 504 Timeout message. Also as part of the process interaction with Stripe, Stripe's servers have to make a call back to your site (to let WordPress know they successfully processed the transaction), but if that takes too long, you are going to see issues from Stripe too.

It looks like the site is hosted on 1&1 (or IONOS as they go by these days). I may even hazard a guess that the site is on a shared hosting package (it looks like anything that costs less than £10 per month is shared on IONOS). It doesn't seem to be up to the job whatever package it is.

As an afterthought, it is also probably illegal! Under GDPR, you should not be running a membership site that stores people's personal information on any kind of shared hosting.

Thank you Mike, the hosting co is called Fasthosts, I have a support ticket open with them, I will ask them about server and sharing issues.

Ah yes. Fastshosts and 1&1 have the same parent company.

I will ask them about more robust hosting and if not I will sack them off lol!  TBH, if it is just ‘server load’ that would be great cos then it’s not me that broke it.

Thanks again!

This is interesting to me, because MP support has told us repeatedly
that this *only* happens at SiteGround. Although, I suppose that if
you're have very unusual slowness perhaps it doesn't count.

If that's the only MP rule you have (the one in the picture) I don't
see how that could cause a problem.

I thought perhaps I was getting the Gateway Error because I was coming
from the US. But based on Mike Little's comments I guess that's not the
case. I'll be very interested to hear that you get from Fasthosts.

Regarding GDPR, I *hope* the situation is a little bit more flexible
than that, or almost everyone who has any kind of affordable hosting is
in violation. And what about the fact that SiteGround's customers (for
example) are now actually hosted on Google? Siteground insists that
they have stringent confidentiality agreements with Google. What
exactly are my GDPR obligations as a siteground user???
