The company who distribute my monthly email newsletter are giving up that side of their business to concentrate on other things.

Can anyone recommend a good value email newsletter distribution service – or maybe even some software that does it for you?

Maybe it’s even possible to use some of the free services offered by the big players such as Google or Microsoft these days?

I’ve got 15,000 subscribers currently, and the newsletter is a 10 Kb plain text file

Anyone want to quote? J

cheers

We use MailChimp successfully, and using Gravity Forms with the MailChimp addon makes API work a doddle. Think the price may be higher for your amount of subscribers though. Aweber is a good second choice (and also has a Gravity Form addon)

http://mailchimp.com/pricing/  and pay as you go model

Good to use a separate service incase you move off WP ever (why would you...)
loads of metrics on open / bounce rates etc
you can segment your list / lists

plus HTML templates..... noting that HTML in email readers is not like browsers ref CSS support
note you mentioned plain text - Mailchimp forces you to include plain-text in any case ( older devices )
if you have 15,000 subs guessing you want to create the best impression i.e. HTML.

I have implemented mailchimp several times Jon - can not do july MWUG btw.

also used this too

I can add another vote for Mailchimp.

But I will also recommend against Aweber (see here for my reasons: http://z1.tl/no2aweber)

With all of the reputable mailing list managers you may have to convince them that you legitimately can import your current mailing list. They are all desperate to keep spammers from using their service that they insist on double opt-in, though in the case of importing a list they have different processes.

Another I've heard good things about (but not used) is Mad Mimi https://madmimi.com/service_agreements/choose_plan
Very design/female oriented marketing, but the service looks good.

Whoever you go with I would definitely consider moving to html email even if you keep it plain text looking. It means you can track opens as well as clicks. Invaluable feedback. With Mailchimp you can feed those click stats right into your Google Analytics.

Another vote for mailchimp from me.

With your number of subscribers mailchimp may want to know they all have opted in to receive your mails. Shouldn't be a problem though.

Many thanks to all who responded on the Email Newsletters query

It looks like Mailchimp.com gets the most votes

But – with 15,000 subscribers, I am pushed into a pricing zone I can’t justify economically on the site

Are there any cheaper ways of distributing ?

I wouldn’t be opposed to sending out bulk emails myself

Or maybe that could be automated in some way?

Cheers

Roy

PS – I will be at the July MWUG meeting – glad to discuss it there

If you're prepared to self-host a solution I'd vote for phplist - it's open source and pretty easy to integrate into a site. You may need to check whether it can handle that number of subscribers though. Or does your host provide mailing lists as part of your web hosting - I know that my own hosting does have that as default (although mine is a reseller account)

Ok, so this is a question about mailchimp/constantcontact more than
anything else, but is probably as relevant here as anywhere.

I, personally, really hate HTML email. It's annoying... it's not my
thing. Let's not argue - let's agree to disagree. :)

However, I recognise the value things like mailchimp offer (instant
unsubscribe, good chances at passing spam filters etc.)

Could I launch a text-only, PGP-signed newsletter with one of these
systems... or would I be forced to accept a HTML version? :(

No requirement to use HTML with Mailchimp. The first few test emails I sent were plain text.

Also worth noting, they have a delivery only service where you create the emails  and use their network to send them. It's called Mandrill http://mandrill.com/

They even have a WordPress plugin, that just sends any WP email through their system. I have it running on three sites as an experiment and it's great. I have two set to send all emails as html with tracking, and one just sending plain text emails.

All on different domains, but through the same account. You just need some DNS knowledge to set it all up.

Oh yeah, and the first 12,000 emails a month are free.

I'll give another vote to Mandrill, we've used it on lots of sites and works great. Stops WP emails getting put in the spam folder.

If you're storing your list in WP somehow then sending out through Mandrill, you get the benefits of MailChimp but 15k emails will only cost 60cents a month!

As a quick tip, test all plugins to make sure they're using Mandrill once it is installed. Most do and should use WP Mail which gets filtered into Mandrill but some use the PHP mail function which does get pulled across and will need to be acommadated.

Thanks Mike (and others)

I can hardly believe this Mandrill pricing !

Mailchimp would cost me $ 75 per month to send 15,000 email newsletters

But Mandrill will only charge $ 0.60 !

And yet Mandrill is a start-up WITHIN Mailchimp

Is there a catch?

It seems almost too good to be true

Cheers

Hi Roy,

The catch is in the level of service being offered. With MailChimp, they provide list management, newsletter editing interface, stats, email tracking and user management.

With Mandrill you only get email sending and basic stats. You have to use something else for list management, signups, double opt in, email generation, content insertion etc.

Roy - the thought occurred to me, and now I have to ask

sending out to 15,000 subs
is there any monetisation involved here at all ? can there be ?

I see you sell ebooks

1% conversion of those subs = 150 purchases * £1.95 = say £300 * your profit margin = ?
would cover the Mailchimp fee ?
a 5%  conversion...

HTML emails may well lead to a better conversion %
the only way to find out i guess is to test it - randomly segment the list and do 50% plain text, 50% HTML
or segment on eg people who have purchased before be more likely to purchase again / segment by demographic ? / interests ?

apologies if you are doing all of this already.

Hi Phil – and thanks for your comments and suggestions

Yes – there is an ATTEMPT at monetisation

But it is difficult to generate sales from a newsletter without seeming crass and pushy

I get plenty of positive feedback for its entertainment value – but not many sales

I have wondered about an HTML version, which might seem more professional

And was held back by the (perhaps now-outdated) argument *against* HTML emailings

Segmentation and groups would be a very welcome luxury

But for now I am happy to send out a simple email message

INCIDENTALLY – if anybody in the MWUG has something to promote, I would be happy to give it a mention (if it has general relevance)

Or – you could even take out paid advertising J

For the moment, I am keeping my fingers crossed on this http://mandrill.com solution

Best wishes

Hi,

Mandrill : designed to fix the problem of your emails ending up in someones junk folder because you are faking headers etc.

Mailchimp : designed to actually get people to read your newsletter and do an action.

Thats the reason behind the pricing difference.

The other option come to think of it is CiviCRM which can be integrated into WP (i.e. it has a plug-in) it's good at mailings but it may well be overkill for what you need but I think it's worth a look

I'm still on the lookout for a recommended email newsletter plugin or service.

I discovered why the Mandrill plugin is so cheap.

It doesn't manage subscription lists: you've got to do that separately via something like MailChimp.

From the WP Plugins list I located SendPress which has a one off payment of $99

And Campayn which charges $25 per 25,000 mailings

Does anybody have experience of using either of these two options?

You really should be using Mailchimp. You really shouldn't be running a mailing list through WordPress. It's fraught with problems.

FWIW: Mandrill is written by the MailChimp guys. You can tie the two systems together really very easily. But, as Rhys says, MailChimp is easily the best solution for mailing lists regardless of platform. Mandrill is a nice developer tool to make it easy to integrate with Mailchimp, though,

Thanks to Richard and Rhys

The problem with Mailchimp (for me) is expense

It would cost $150 per month to send an email newsletter to 15,000 subscribers

That’s more than I can justify in terms of income from the site

So I am looking for either -

A software program which integrates with WP that I can run myself

Or

A cheap third party mailing service (preferred)

But I realise you can’t have everything J

And – I wouldn’t be opposed to sending a few hundred bulk emails per day, manually

Cheers

Hi Roy,

It's unlikely you're going to find a hosted third party solution that does everything for cheap.

Usually people who have over 15,000 subscribers are making more than $150
on each email they are sending out unless it's full of freebie seekers.

That's seems to be your issue so to me the only option you have is something like http://arpreach.com

$150pcm to manage 15k subscribers isn't a lot. the cheap way is to sign up to mailchimp and import 2,000 in 8 different accounts and send 8 mailers each time - but setting that up and maintaining alone will cost you more than $150pcm in time

Alex – your idea of multiple accounts with MailChimp is ingenious – would they not be wise to that ?

Pete – your arpReach is appealing because it’s just a one-off payment

You can send emails from your own server using send_mail or wp_mail or even better phpMailer, you will need a developer to code something  you can use, but i guess once thats done its done.

All

I send mails from my own server - but not 1000's at a time. I am looking at
mailchimp/mandrill as alternatives.

I don't do anything to WP at all but just run postfix appropriately
configured. This needs sysadmin access of course.

To ensure a reasonable chance of delivery you need to set a reverse DNS
settings in the nameserver and also an spf record so that mail routers know
that your server is authorised to send mail from the url.

If you run your own nameservers this is easily done - I use maradns which
requires the settings:

/origin yoururl.com. ~
% +86400 FQDN4 your.own.ip.no ~
*.% +86400 A your.own.ip.no ~
% TXT 'v=spf1 +a +mx ptr a:yoururl.com -all' ~
% mx 10 mail.% ~
mail.% +86400 IN A your.mail.ip.no

as yoururl.com.db file (assuming your mail routing is done elsewhere).

NB0 you need to ensure that the from address includes the domain.
NB1 the FQDN4 automatically sets a reverse DNS.
NB2 note the "." after the url on the origin line.
NB3 you cannot use the substitution "%" for the url in the spf line - you have
to spell it out.

I've been using Campaign Monitor very happily indeed for a number of years. Pricing details here: http://www.campaignmonitor.com/pricing/

But maybe the main issue isn't technological, maybe it's more to do with the design and purpose of the newsletter? If you're sending plain text to 15k people and they're not responding by buying in to the offers and services that you're putting in front of them, it could be that the email needs to work harder for you - better overall design, better calls to action, etc.?

The company who distribute my monthly email newsletter are giving up that side of their business to concentrate on other things.

Can anyone recommend a good value email newsletter distribution service – or maybe even some software that does it for you?

Maybe it’s even possible to use some of the free services offered by the big players such as Google or Microsoft these days?

I’ve got 15,000 subscribers currently, and the newsletter is a 10 Kb plain text file

Anyone want to quote? J

cheers
