Hello All

I made this page to test out using video header in Twenty Seventeen: http://www.julieanneland.com/vwnwtest/

The video is hosted on youtube.

On Desktop it works fine.

On my iPad the video displays but does not autorun.  It is displayed with an awkward preview and a play button.

On my phone (over wifi) the video does not load and my default image (spaceman) is displayed.  The video plays ok directly on the youtube mobile site.

I looked in the Documentation and it says this:  if both a video and image are added, the image will be used as a placeholder to display while the video loads, and as a fallback on smaller screens where videos may be harder to serve over mobile networks.

I'd love for the video to autoplay on all devices.  Any suggestions? Do you think there is any value in asking my video editor to make a shorter edit at the specific theme size?  I don't Code, any simple suggestions very welcome or maybe I should forget this idea?

Many thanks

Julieanne.

I'm afraid you're a little out of luck with auto-playing. Video is disabled on mobile in twentyseventeen for bandwidth reasons, it's an awful user experience if they're anywhere but at home on wifi.

You can probably re-enable it, but it won't auto-play. Apple devices don't allow autoplaying of videos in Safari. iOS10 allows short videos with no audio track to auto-play though. See the official webkit docs for the restrictions https://webkit.org/blog/6784/new-video-policies-for-ios/

As an aside, I'm in a coffeeshop, the page easily uses ~1MB per second, and really struggles on the wifi here ( Common bar ). After 30MB the Youtube player threw up a notice and a spinner that it was having problems. If I was on a roaming plan visiting on holiday or for a WordCamp that's a very expensive page to load

Thank you Tom

So, whilst it would be a good idea to have video edited for faster loading, in the long run not worth it if it won't play on Mobile.

I'm forgetting Twentyseventeen, glad I didn't invest any time into it.
