How to arrange a 'Bathukamma'... |
|
Bathukamma is made of multiple concentric layers of flowers, usually seven; At the very top Turmeric (Pasupu) powder is used to make a conical shape symbolical of Mother Goddess Gauri.
This is a humble attempt to explain how to make a Bathukamma 1. Choose a platform strong enough to hold the flower arrangement (A paper plate would do) 2. Place 5 long white or green or yellow strings (used to stitch buttons or hooks on dresses) on the paper plate spaced out evenly and criss-cross (will use them to tie up the flowers at the end) 3. Place the paper plate on top of a carrying tray or regular plate (to lift and take to venue) 4. Pick flowers with long stalks (length of the stalks determines the size of the Bathukamma) 5. Arrange the flowers face outwards in a circle so that the stalks form a mesh, note the stalks ends should meet or be near the base of the flower at the opposite end 6. Fill the space with small leaves or grass cuttings, this is just filler. 7 Arrange the second layer of flowers taking care to have them slightly behind the bottom layer; try to have them in the gaps where the flower petals touch in the bottom row. ( length of the stalks would be smaller then the bottom row) 8. Repeat steps 4 to 6 till you reach the top of the cone 9 Place a beetle nut (Paan) leaf at the very top in the hollow and arrange the turmeric cone (Gauri) apply tilak (Kumkum) 10. Pull the string end s up and above the Bathukamma and tie them so the knot comes at the bottom row or if possible underneath the bottom row to hold the flowers in place, Care should be taken to make this as inconspicuous as possible. Experienced arrangers do not have to use the string. 11. Insert two Agarbathies (Incense sticks) do not light the incense sticks, they are lit at the venue final . |
