Hi Guys,

Nice to see some mails from PEARL. Actually I was waiting for some more ideas to pour in. But seems like every body is thinking like me :)

First, let me give my opinion(s) abt  some of the ideas given in last mails:

Idea 1: As per my knowledge goes, Partiallity and prejudice exists everwhere. we are not living in a "utopian" world. isn't it ? I think we shouldn't care much abt the partiallity factor, as long as we are supporting needy. It is not as if we are giving money blindly. We will have to cross check the students financial & educational background and interest. If we are waiting for best candidate of all, then our wait never ends.   In that sense, the third idea is very good. But I feel it is more time consuming and need every ones active participation. In any case, we will be  cross-checking the details and we as a team, will be giving the final call.So we shouldn't have any issues with idea1 or idea3.

Idea2: Let us keep our goal focused. Our sole purpose of starting PEARL is to support primary education in what ever why we can. I think primary education is the real education. In india,9 out 10 students of class I are not entering in to college.(Courtesy: Times of india, 9/07/08). So we have so much to offer. So I don't prefer second idea. (But if some one of us brings a real needy person and if we have enough funds, then we can always consider.)

Plz wait for my second mail for more intersting stuff.

Thanks
Raghavendra

Guys,

I was expecting more replies to that mail...... Please do reply.....

Ideas we had so far are:
1. Giving the money to some government school poor students based on the feed back given by teachers.  For this we should know one good person working in school who won't show any partiality and one person from our pearl who belongs to that place and take the responsibility for everything.   For this we need to decide the school and person from the pearl.
Feedback: Getting a right person, who can help us in finding the right student, is very difficult. Believe me, as I have discussed and spoke with my own school teachers, many students in my school needs our help. But when I personally discussed about this, they are clearly showing some partiality. Not only that, few of them tried to discourage me. few are not at all supporting this activity. To my mind, with this option, we won't be able to achieve our goals. Obviously our help will be deviated from the needy people.

2. selecting only 1 or 2 persons who are joining intermediate  and trying to concentrate only on those people.(of course its not to minimize dropouts)
Feedback: This is a good idea, but above thing applies for this one also.
Feedback from ravi: conducting exams is not feasible as we have already seen........

3. Why can't each one of us nominate one or two person and finally select the right person based on the profile like financial background and enthusiasm to study and etc... And also for selecting the right person from the nominations, we can form a committee every year and give the responsibility of selection to them.
no feedback..........

Guys,

Here comes my second mail.

Lot of govt. schools lack basic infrastructure. So  Instead of funding  one or two students every year, I would suggest we can adopt a primary school/secondary school. We can provide required infrastructure books, slates and sports kits. one of my friend Prasad (our senior in IIT, communication engg, electrical dept) is doing similar thing in his native village. Iam attaching his mail abt the things that he has done to this mail.  Plz go through it. It gives required inspiration and proposes a direction we may wish to travel.

Iam CC ing this mail to prasad. Prasad, feel free to add anything if you like to . Shankar, the present settings doesn't allow outsiders to mail to group. Can you change the settings so that prasad can reply.

Plz find the attached mail below.

thanks

Hi Friends,

Thank you very much for all your support from initiation to execution.

As we were planning, Last Monday (June 16Th) went to Banapuram village (My home town), distributed all stationary & dictionaries in schools.

The list of items provided in Primary School:
    1. 50 - Slates for 1st class students

    2. 45 - English Alphabetical text books (State government initiated to start English as a
        Subject from 1st class itself)

    3. 750 – short note books (for the 3rd, 4Th, 5th class students Along with pen, pencil,
        Eraser.

The list of items provided in Secondary School:

 1.      250 - English to Telugu pocket dictionary for everyone + High School English
       Grammar book along with key.

 2.      15 – Maps. (3 - Andhra Pradesh, 5 – India, 5 - World maps, 1 - Human body & 1 - muscle system covering
from 6Th class to 10Th class)

    3.      30 – Long notebooks. 3 notebooks for 1st & 2nd rankers in every class

  Total expenditure was: 13,450

It's just not the distribution, Organized "MANA BADI BATA" event (Social awareness on education). Invited Mandal & District level Education Officers too along with village elders & parents.

It turned out as a big event than expected.  Everyone shared their experiences, thoughts & addressed the current problems in village (Ex. Parents participation, etc…), gave speeches.

Every one was happy to see the support coming from old students & outsiders (every one of you) for the cause of education. All the officers were surprised to see this event 1st time in my mandal, were happy and appreciated.

They liked the idea of providing pocket dictionaries to everyone in High school as all of you know English Medium introduced in Government schools from this academic year & dictionaries will be useful in grate extend.

Took as action item from Government side, to look into the possibility of providing dictionaries to all government schools along with regular books depends on feasibility down the line may be in 2 years.

Good thing is, other members came forward to extend their support by announcing their willingness to provide Books + Dress for the students who have good attendance, irrespective of marks in primary school.

 Flash News:

The present 10Th class - 2008 topper from Banapurm, secured admission in IIIT started by Andhra Pradesh government(3 IIITs) for integrated course (2 years Intermediate + 4 years engineering) with minimal fee to help the rural background students in reaching highly respected positions, socially & economically.

.All 3 IIITs will offer a six-year integrated course for students who passed SSC.The total intake will be 6000 & the admission criterion is:

 1. Only for students who have studied in Government schools, secured good marks in Maths, Scince subjects &  having good overall performance.

This is only beginning, would expect everyone support to continue these type of programs in near feature.

Regards,
Prasad

Hi Friends,

In my last trip to my village Banapuram i visited Primary & Secondary Schools, surprised to see the proper staff & high tech infrastructure (Computer lab
with 6 systems, projector , printer & Internet)  which are not there at our time But they lack simple & Basic things which must be there to give best results.

I need your support on providing these things and inputs with your valuable experience.

Required class rooms, rest rooms & electricity have been set up(work in progress) with the help of village community.
People are providing financial assistance to 10Th class topper to purse Intermediate. Apart from these still there are some basic problems.

I found very hard to see the children in primary school(Most of the children's are from Back Ward classes )coming only because
of Mid day meal, doesn't have Slates, Notebooks, pens to write & doesn't have proper dress. Teachers are helpless & cant
insist to get these things.

I am sure we have more insight to create proper environment which will be helpful for the students in all the respects (not only in studies).
I spoke with teachers regarding these issues and found that some of the things which we can take care as a initial step so that
it will encourage others to come forward & take initiative. We can handle the below mentioned things on commencement of new academic year June'08:

Primary School:
Strength ~ 210

Proposed activities:
1. Providing slates for students up to 2nd class.
2. Providing Note books for students from 3rd class to 5Th class.
3. Providing pens,  pencils & scales.

Secondary School:
strength ~ 250

Library has been set up with the help of Baskar reddy (Hyd Income Tax commissioner). But lacks in resources especially in English subject.
As we know, communication skills are the major hurdle for students come from rural areas.  Students are really bad in general awareness.
I thought it would be nice if we can get the News Papers on working days.

Proposed activities :
1. Pocket English - Telugu dictionary.
2. News papers (1 - telugu, 1 english)
3. Basic charts (India, world maps) in every class.

We can think of providing dress(In primary school) in later stage depends on our convenient and the best possible way.
It will certainly help the persons who are settled as a tailor after completion of Degree & Intermediate in village.

Feel free to suggest or alter any ideas.

Regards,
Prasad

Hi,
I Support Raghus suggestion.
Adapt a school and improve the infrastructure of that school.
This is a good initail move to get interaction with schools.
keep group active. Even with  this step, I think, we can still maintain the main idea, reducing drop outs, behind the group. In this adapted school, If we identify a person in
need of help or detect drop outs because of monitory or moral support. We can  help them any way.

Thanks,
Muniswar

so what is our next step....  what is our final decision?
i think improving infastructure is good idea, but is it going to reduce dropouts?

Hi friends,

we will start something atleast...in stead of waiting or thinking thinking thinking thinking.....at the end mind blast...

i can see in everyone the strong will to help people...i hope thats enough for our work in the future also...

Hence, i want to say...no talking only action....once people saw our work or our activities...automatically support will follow...

In India, so far what i observed is lack of initiation...that we already have in everyone...onlything we need to show to public that we are going to help.

if we keep on discussing this issue..its never ending...or if you ask anybody...u can see always some discourage or negligence or some useless suggestions...

stop asking to teachers or anybody....if we feel that we want to do some work...we will just do it....

i hope everyone understood my feelings....

Chandu.

Hi friends

After long time iam involved in this discussions sorry for that, because of great will from you we have piled up good amount of money, Instead of just go on discussing about wt to be done better to stick to one idea and practice it immediately.

Improving the infrastructure idea by Raghu is  a good option (providing books, sports kits etc). but not providing tables of that sort. This can be done to  AKIVIDU school since we have promised them and conducted examination.Definitely we will face problems while execution but we can get some knowledge about the areas where we can concentrate

I was not able to deliver what i supposed to do and keep the faith  expected by you because i was roaming around and out of INDIA most of the time iam extremely sorry for that. But i promise u i will be settled in Hyderabad and actively involved after my marriage

Hi friends,

I am also with raghu...... But, I feel we might need to go in search
of another school as i remember Vijay telling me that AKIVIDU school
is scheduled to be closed in next two years following some government
ruling. So, whatever we do, we may not be able to deliver it
effectively for long term. I requset vijay to confirm the above news
(even i just remember him telling me and not sure about this). Also,
In case we start searching for new school. Please see to it that it is
nearer to our place of work so that we can be more efficient.

Finally, I guess We concluded on improving the infrastructure.

@Gali: I feel we can definitely reduce dropouts by improving the
infrastructure. Also, as raghu told, we can have backup fund for
helping economically deprived students.........

Hi all,

As I know, CMH school in AKIVIDU may be closed in 2010. This information I got from school HM. But they are trying to make it run till 2015. But I am not sure about the recent progress in that direction. I need to confirm once again with the school.

ok guys.
i think searching a school in banglore or near by banglore is better.  as all of u like, we will try to provide all necessary things to poor students.  but i strongly believe its better to give money also to 1 or 2 students (money should b equal to the amount that he can earn by doing the work).
