MALVERN AREA BETTERMENT ASSOCIATION
December 5, 2010 official minutes
The regular meeting of the Malvern Area Betterment Association was
held at the Classic Café Banquet room. Members present: Pres. Stacy
Means, Bev Dashner, Patty Beres, Spencer Terry, MinDee Sommerla, Ed
Mulholland, Lynn Christensen, Kathleen Starr and guest Kim Krupinski.
President Stacy Means called the meeting to order at 4:00 PM. Patty
Beres made a motion to accept the minutes; MinDee S. seconded, all
approved.
Patty Beres gave the treasurer’s report including the bills from the
past month. The general fund account contains $11,230.35 which
includes $10,000 grant funds for the Welcome Center. The special
events account has $5,591.05. MinDee S. motioned to accept the report;
Bev D. seconded; unanimous approval.
Festival of Trees chairperson, Patty Beres reported that everything
went well for the event, however all numbers were down, fewer trees,
fewer vendors, even the number of children visiting Santa was down.
There were 26 decorated trees; $117.00 in admission fees for the
Holiday Market; pancake feed brought in $381 for the freewill
donation; and there were 20 vendors. The soup luncheon only netted the
4-H club $130.00.
Spencer Terry gave a report regarding the Gateway of Chaos. There were
several corporate donations and employee matching donations for
volunteer hours worked. Those included $500 from Qwest; $200 from H &
R Block; $50 from MidAmerican Energy. There was a total of over
$4,000.00 for revenue this year.
For next year, since the Classic Café will not be available for the
Gateway of Chaos, Terry reported that the former A & M Greenpower
building could be used with approx. 4,000 sq. ft of space available.
New owners are local Pioneer Seed dealers who have offered the use of
the space to MABA for either indoor or outdoor venues. There is
climate controlled space for a waiting area. However, if the any space
over 1,000 sq. ft is used indoors it must have a sprinkler system
installed which could cost anywhere from $6,000-$70,000 and must be
installed by a sprinkler company. Spencer will check on sprinkler bids
by next meeting.
MinDee S. reported on membership and ribbon cuttings. A discussion was
held regarding membership dues for students and single members. It was
decided that memberships for 2011 should be as follows:
High School Students: $10
Single Member: $20
Family Membership: $35
Business Memberships divided into 4 levels:
Bronze: $50; Silver: $125; Gold: $250; Diamond: $500
Businesses or individuals may join at any level. Businesses that join
will have the logo of their choosing on MABA banners. The size of the
logo will depend upon what level the business has joined. A plaque
will be made with businesses and the level of sponsorship. Businesses
will get discount or free tickets to MABA sponsored events – the
number depends upon the level of membership. Several other ideas were
presented (attached) regarding prizes, plaques, and an award ceremony
for volunteers. Another idea that was presented was tentative
guidelines for scholarship(s) to be offered to students participating
as volunteers for MABA. These ideas will be discussed further at the
next meeting.

Stacy M. and Bev D. reported on the very successful City Wide
Initiative meeting. Approximately 50 people attended to discuss their
ideas and concepts for improving Malvern. A follow-up meeting will be
held to gather further ideas and information to get started on some of
the top projects.

Bev D. gave a report on the library trustee’s progress in seeking bids
for renovating the library basement. They are seeking bids for
waterproofing, new windows and new gutters for the building to prepare
for the Welcome Center. Bids are expected by the next MABA meeting.

Kathleen Starr gave the group more information about the website
(www.shopmalvern.net) which she had developed for MABA and the
businesses in the community. The purpose of the website is to bring in
revenue to local businesses. Her ideas included printing vinyl signs
for each participating business window to help drive customers to the
website. The startup cost per business is low as well as the
maintenance fee if people wish to participate.

The nominations for 2011 officers for MABA election was postponed
until the next meeting.

There was a discussion about whether the bike racks should be removed
through the winter months. It was noted that MABA will need to
officially donate the bike racks to the city of Malvern on paper for
the record. There will need to be an official letter directed to the
City Council.

Reminder of the January 29, 2011 pancake feed sponsored by the Senior
Center. MABA will be helping serve the meal.

Ideas were discussed for the tram engines, but no conclusions were
decided upon.

Meeting adjourned at 6:15 PM.
Bev Dashner, Secretary
