August 7, 2011
Minutes of the Regular Meeting
Malvern Area Betterment Association
President Stacy Means called the meeting to order at 5:00 PM in the
MABA Welcome Center. Members present were Deb Breeding, Joyce Hall,
MinDee Sommerla, Gary Jones, Bev Dashner Gary Jones, John Downey, Greg
Jones, Spencer Terry, and guest, J.B. Dixon. The July minutes were
read; MinDee made a motion to approve and Deb B. seconded. All
approved unanimously.
Treasurer Patty Beres was absent. Bev D. gave her report. The special
event (GOC) account now contains $9,295.60. The general fund contains
$4,631.87. Independence Day net profits were $2,576.88. The Welcome
Center fund still has $800.84 to expend from the grant. Joyce H. made
a motion to approve the treasurer’s report. Greg J. seconded. All
approved.
Pres. Means noted more volunteers will be needed with the upcoming
events. Suggestions included asking friends to help in volunteer
events. She requested that the membership list appear on the website.
There was an En Plein Air discussion about the events to be presented.
The posters and other advertising have been printed or published.
Patty B. is chairman for the vendors.
Means thanks all the participants who worked at the RAGBRAI weekend
concession trailer and welcome center.
Spencer Terry reported on the progress for Gateway of Chaos. At this
time things are about 3 weeks behind due to electrical issues. To date
there is $1,400 in sponsorships with more coming in including Kohll’s
Pharmacy. Volunteer numbers are up this year with approximately 60-65
people. EMTs and security people are still needed. Construction begins
next Tuesday from 10 AM-10PM. Classic Café may feed the volunteers.
There will be approximately 35-40 people working each night the haunt
is operating.
Deb B. and Stacy M. discussed the ribbon cuttings in the community.
MABA will need to try to reach new people in the community. It was
suggested that a Welcome to Malvern booklet would help newcomers to
the community with a list of businesses. We could include promotional
material in a welcome packet for Welcome Center visitors. Possibly a
free Malvern Leader could be included. A new tab on the website might
be added for new residents.
MinDee gave a report on the membership committee. It has been
determined that Donor Perfect is $40 per month, but we will also need
to buy the support program (the median price is $24 for phone, email,
and fax support.
The Mills County Community Foundation grant deadline is coming up. It
was discussed and decided to not apply this fall.
Telephone service was discussed for the Welcome Center. It was decided
to try to use the Google number if possible which would forward the
calls to up to three other member’s phones. Gary J. & Bev D. will work
to set this up.
The Welcome Center will be open soon and will need volunteers and a
sign to indicate that it is open. Deb B. motioned and Gary J. seconded
to ask John Bainter to print the signs for the door and the OPEN sign.
At 6:40 PM the meeting was adjourned.
