MALVERN AREA BETTERMENT ASSOCIATION
January 9, 2011 official minutes
The regular meeting of the Malvern Area Betterment Association was
held at the Carnegie Conference Center. Members present: Pres. Stacy
Means, Bev Dashner, Patty Beres, MinDee and Shelby Sommerla, Gary
Jones, Tom Mulholland, Cheryl & Greg Jones, Deb Breeding, Carl
Phillips, Joyce Hall, John Downey, and Marjean Sargent. President
Stacy Means called the meeting to order at 4:00 PM. MinDee S. made a
motion to accept the minutes; Tom M. seconded, all approved.
Patty Beres gave the treasurer’s report including the bills from the
past month. The general fund account contains $12,244.80 which
includes $10,000 grant funds for the Welcome Center. The special
events account has $7,991.05. Festival of Trees report indicated
income of $797 and expenses of $1,072. Bev D. motioned to accept the
report; Patty B. seconded; unanimous approval.
Marjean Sargent presented a proposal from Mills County Tourism group.
They plan to print 7,000 copies of a full color brochure highlighting
tourism attractions in Mills County. The brochures will be distributed
around the state in Visitor Centers and will be available for two
years. Sargent asked if MABA would consider purchasing a business card
size ad for $200 to promote events and activities in Malvern. Deadline
for the proofs is January 21. Joyce Hall made a motion to purchase the
ad, Bev D. seconded, all approved.
After a discussion about the continuation of Gateway of Chaos, Patty
B. made a motion to continue working toward an agreement with the
owners to use the Pioneer Seed building at no cost to MABA upon
approval of MABA’s board. Gary J. seconded the motion, all approved.
MinDee S. reported on the membership drive for 2011. She has developed
an official email address for MABA: maba.info51551@gmailcom. MABA
also has a Facebook page. Sommerla read the membership letter, asked
for suggestions or changes. Several ideas were given. It was suggested
that MABA should create a brochure explaining what MABA is about. The
brochure could be handed out at events MABA sponsors. MinDee will have
membership letters printed. Stacy will get envelopes. The membership
letter will be emailed to the entire MABA membership list this month.

Tom Mulholland reported his conversation with David Kohl who indicated
that Kohls will open a drug store in Malvern this summer in the old
Classic Café building.

Bev Dashner gave a spreadsheet presentation of the cost breakdown for
the Welcome Center. It includes the $10,000 grant already available,
the possibility of using $4,000 already budgeted from the City of
Malvern for the waterproofing on the exterior, and making a $6,300
request from the Mills County Community Foundation grant to cover the
cost of 12 new energy efficient windows for the basement of the
Carnegie Building. Greg J. made a motion to continue with the project
as presented, MinDee S. seconded and the motion was approved.

A second annual Valentines dinner was planned. Cheryl J., Stacy M.,
and Darren Bartley will co-chair the dinner to be held in the new
Classic Café. This year there will not be a donation of fresh fish, so
other plans will be made for the budgeting of the food. Volunteer
waiters and waitresses will be needed. It will be held on Feb. 14. Bev
D. will take care of the advertising.

Patty B. gave a profit/loss summary of MABA events sponsored last
year. The following is listed by event:
Maui in Malvern: $1,014.00
En Plein Air: $302
Festival of Trees: -($275)
Valentines dinner: $1,200
All Class Reunion: $1,083
Fair Street Dance: $700
Gateway of Chaos: $5,472.44 (includes $500 donation from Qwest)

A discussion of which events to sponsor in 2011 will be held at the
next MABA meeting.

The annual nominations and election of officers was held: Greg Jones
made a motion to keep the present board for the coming year. MinDee S.
seconded the motion. There was unanimous approval. The 2011 board of
directors is as follows:

One vacancy on the board is that of youth board member due to the
resignation of Amanda Rowe.

Pres. Means announced that the Malvern Firemen will be assisting with
the January 29 pancake breakfast for the senior center instead of MABA
volunteers.

East Mills Boosters organization requested help from MABA volunteers
to serve a soup supper on January 25 at the high school during a
wrestling tournament. Several volunteers stepped forward including Deb
Breeding, Cheryl & Greg Jones, Gary Jones, Patty Beres, and Stacy
Means.

With no further business, the meeting was adjourned at 5:30 PM
