Battlefield - The Doctor as Merlin

I've just seen the first three parts of Battlefield. Is it true that
the knights are from a parallel universe? That's what one of them (forgot the
name) replies to Brigadier Bambera of UNIT. I thought they were supposed to be
from the past somehow. Perhaps the past of a parallel universe. Would it mean
that there are many parallel versions of the Doctor?

I hope, really, that we get to see Merlin in the fourth part...

It's established (repeatedly) that they're from another dimension /
parallel universe. But given that Morgaine is immortal and ancient, she
was around a thousand years ago for the original battle against Arthur
(which ended with him being taken from their universe to ours and hidden
away under the lake), so you could say she's "from the past" in that
sense.
