At the risk of blaspheming, the sounds he's using in that clip are pretty thin and lifeless compared to the original. I'm pretty sure there were better fake analog sounds to be had by 2001. Surprising.
To the OP - I found some old notes when I had my Triton Pro X and played this song and I used Program #B080 Mega Big Synth and if I recall it sounded pretty good for that song - might need to tweak it some ... but try that and add another layer if you need to ... Hope it helps pointing you in right direction with your Triton ...
I use a factory program in my Jupiter 80 for this song ("Classic Ways"). It is actually a split program, with the intro synth patch in the upper portion, and the synth brass (verse) in the lower portion. This program nails these patches. When I saw Journey the summer before last, from what I heard, Jonathan was using the same patch on his Jupiter 80.
I play the intro synth line with two hands, but I don't do the crossover thing, although it certainly would be "showier." Instead, I prefer to use my left thumb for the low E and my right hand for the rest of it. I play the whistle/solo with my left hand, and keep the intro line going with my right, sans low E.
I had the opportunity to hear Journey play Separate Ways in concert before the song was recorded (I believe they wrote it while they were touring). It was quite something to hear that powerful intro/outro synth line without any advance expectation. It filled up the entire (then-called) Rosemont Horizon. I once found a YouTube clip of one of those early performances, and you could tell they were still developing the song....the synth fill during the verses was missing, and IIRC, some of the words were slightly different, as well.
I play this song with my local `80s band - I used to do the intro riff this way on my Triton 76, with its unweighted and ever so slightly narrower than regulation keys. Then I found the perfect patch for that sound on my PC3x with its weighted, slightly wider keys - It's amazing how the slightest difference in key width becomes noticeable when you're playing tenths!
There's a way to "cheat" on a multitimbral synth/workstation to make the stretch "go away". Saw that someone had done this with a Kurzweil PC3 patch. Program one layer to cover the B to G (upper portion) of the riff. Program a second layer, same sound, on just the G below the B, and transpose just that note down 3 semitones. It now plays the low-note of the riff pattern, and the whole part now covers an octave instead of a 10th.
When I learned SW, I found it easier to play the opening signature riff with my left hand. I set up a split on my S70XS with the patch for the opening riff to the left and the "solo" patch to the right.
A few years ago I developed Dupuytren's contracture in my left pinky finger, which prevented me from straightening it beyond about a 45-degree angle. So I started playing the opening riff with both hands, using my right hand for the top three notes. I later had surgery to fix my pinky, but I still don't have quite the spread I had before. I can play the riff with one hand, but only after a good warmup. So I usually still play that riff two-handed except during middle solo section.
David, nice job ! As the Jupiter 8 was the synth foundation for the original recording, it follows that Roland samples/models would do justice to the sound. I like the combination of D50 and JP8 Tones for the intro; the main body sound has that gutsy, Jupiter presence. I especially like the solo sound. Being that you optimized these sounds to sit in a live mix, it would be cool to hear a live mix of your band playing SW. Any live recordings of the song available ?
For the band with which I played SW, I used a Yamaha S90ES Performance for the intro and body of the song. It was a combination of two Voices: one based one the classic, Jupiter detuned saws patch, the other a brighter analog timbre with a strong attack. I then adjusted the levels accordingly. For the solo voice I used a patch on my PC3.
I'm planning to check out the sounds that you and Chris (Moonglow) have mentioned - via some JP50 exploration. Am also thinking of attempting the SW sounds entirely within an iPad, using Thor - which is turning out to be a beast.
On second listen, it does have some of that ARP stringiness; but it still sounds very thick. I recall a couple of similar sounds in a Jupiter 6 I tried out in the mid-80's (and now wished I'd bought and kept ).
One thing: I am still very much a novice at programming. I am learning how tweaking one parameter affects another. I, of course, understand the basics of ADSR. It's all the nuances of wave shapes, effects routing, and so forth that I am learning.
Holy cow. I found a recording of SW from the above-referenced show I attended. It is titled "Separate Ways Steve Perry Journey 1982 Rosemont IL" on YouTube. Interesting to hear some of the subtle differences between this version and the final recording.
Learning this song and google landed me here. Theres a lot of great info in the thread. I used Escapes demo as the sound to get to on the intro. Sothanks. It took me a while to get the intro sound but I think its now close using/editing my XV-5050.I set up a patch for the verse/chorus using Rom polysynth sounds. Unfortunately I cant get the RD tone to decay fast as Id like. We will most likely pull it for the first time at a gig so hopefully my patches sound good in the mix.

Karen explains that since Elon Musk is coming into town, she didn't want the party dudes fucking everything up by being themselves in front of it, so she replaced everyone with A-list actors. This includes Christian Bale as Dusty Marlow, Gilbert Gottfried as Stanley Hopson, and Bill Cosby as Gerald Fitzgerald. The latter of which Randall finds completely inappropriate, prompting him to shove the pervert right out of the room. When Randall asked who she got to play him, he was disappointed to find out that Rob Riggle was cast to play him, especially since she got Tilda Swinton to play AFKAK Crawford. He then realizes that AFKAK is actually the only one there not to be replaced, since nobody wanted to play him, not even Nicolas Cage, who was instead cast to play a side table. Just for fun, Christopher Walken comes in, dressed as Hobo Cop.
AFKAK claps his hands and dances, listening to the keytar music being played by Fitz, Bullet, and "Hopson", (who is still being played by Gilbert Gottfried). Randall comes in with some exciting news. AFKAK hopes that he found Gina but Randall is actually talking about the McRib coming back to McDonald's. Bullet expresses his distaste for the McRib, claiming that the only way it could taste any worse was if it was made by Taco Bell. A delivery man comes in with a package for AFKAK. Randall opens the package and finds a sex doll in there. AFKAK lies and says that it's actually headphones and rushes home to fuck his headphones.
Dusty comes in, excited as Hell to announce that his father, Strawberry Marlow is finally returning from the war in Iraq after 20 years. Dusty brags that Strawberry killed Saddam Hussein and Osama Bin Laden. Just then, Strawberry Marlow himself comes in, proving to be a short little effeminate midget with the same country-ass voice and fucked-up personality as Dusty Marlow. Randall inquires if he really killed such Islamic terrorist leaders as Dusty claimed he did and Strawberry Marlow confirms this, claiming that all he does is kill bad guys and crush puss. Strawberry explains the meaning behind his nickname, saying that they call him "Strawberry" because he leaves his enemies like he leaves his puss, blood red and covered in seed. However, he is very disappointed with how his son turned out, believing Dusty to be an effeminate pussy who owns too many cats. Strawberry lets Dusty know that real men own chinchillas as he lets a bunch of his pet chinchillas out to come crawling all over him. Strawberry also takes out some lemon bars for everybody except for Dusty, since he's a complete disappointment. Fitz asks about his life back in the war and Strawberry tells him about how he leads a team called the Strawberry Action Squad, which is comprised of several different characters such as a robot, a giant talking squid, a leprechaun made out of rocks, Kung-Fu Kangaroo, Charles Bronson's Ghost, Lenny the Laser Lizard, Johnny Pecs, Wilbur the Karate Wizard, and Lt. Friskers, the radioactive werewolf. Randall proclaims that this is the biggest crock of horseshit he's ever heard but then clarifies that he's referring to AFKAK pretending his sex doll is headphones, believing Strawberry's story to sound totally legit.
Back at Fitz's Apartment, Bullet and Fitz take a family bath with Junior. Fitz tells Bullet that he scheduled a circumcision for Junior but Bullet opposes this idea, being completely against circumcision. Bullet gives Fitz a pamphlet about the dangers of circumcision. Fitz understands and cancels the appointment. However, he still considers getting Junior the circumcision, since he knows that circumcised penises are much easier to keep clean, plus, they look a lot less disgusting with that unsightly jizz-soaked foreskin covering that beautiful pink meatus.
AFKAK takes his sex doll back to his apartment and turns her on. She says her name is Stacy and AFKAK gets ready to fuck her with some My Hero Academia Sexual Lubricant.
