Pre-release, it had already been solidified in pop-culture history with content creators mimicking the ethereal style on social media. By the time of its release, my feed had already been flooded with dystopian elven imitations. It was lockdown 2020, fairy-core was thriving, providing escapism and a creative outlet. Users explored the darker sides of fairy life, entrapment, loneliness and survival. In 2021, the Fairy Tales photo teasers featured almost empty diners, bedrooms and hospitals; readers blending fact and fiction could imagine these scenarios coming to life in front of them.
Retelling childhood stories, Petra Collins and Alexa Demie play with juxtaposition: dark and light, violence and kindness, delicacy and tension. The soft focus and dreamy photography depict the truthful chaos and survival of mythical beings in a mortal world. The soft padding of the pillow-like book encases dark nightmares and escapist fantasies. Featuring illustrations by Evita Flores, deceivingly innocent, coloured-pencil drawings show butterflies in trees, witches and flying mice, a cottage in flames, and rope-wrapped mermaids accepting their fate.
This book is for lovers of dystopian tales, for anyone interested in modern interpretations of folklore, femxle representation and hyperfeminine aesthetics. I think this book is a great signifier of the zeitgeist and the challenges womxn face today, particularly on social media and image-based communications.
"Wow. This place is beautiful. From the moment you walk in, you are literally standing in a fairytale. You then walk back into the photography room which is straight out of a book. So beautiful. The team is incredible with your child/children. I was nervous about not being right next to her, but they made her feel so special. She didn't even notice I wasn't next to her. I can't wait to receive my images. Thank you to Bluebird Portraits for the opportunity, but even more of a thank you for making my daughter feel confident and beautiful. By the way, the dresses they have for you to choose are insane. So beautiful."
"Wonderful experience. The staff was professional and nice. They made the process smooth and quick transitions from walk in and waiting to changing and the photograph process. The best part was how much my daughter loved it! Thank you and looking forward to seeing the pictures."
"The set was absolutely beautiful. It was nice not to have to get coordinating outfits since they provided beautiful clothing. Our photographer and the other women directed the kids kindly and professionally. Our children had a great time. The portrait came pretty quickly and is really stunning."
"Took my kids for a session and the Bluebird team was absolutely amazing with the kids! Our kids did not want to leave when it was time to leave. Even in the video after viewing the pictures the person was super helpful and patient. I would definitely recommend it to anyone with children. It is worth every second and leaves memories to last a lifetime."
So excited to share the latest in my new Fairy Tale Newborn series. These images are inspired by some of the most beloved fairy tales and nursery rhymes of all time. We all have memories of these iconic stories and they will continue to be told over and over again to our children and grandchildren. Being able to incorporate your newborn into one of these timeless stories is pure magic and something your family can treasure for generations.
Each of these backgrounds is made lovingly by hand. I first hand-dye the fibers I am using to achieve the colors needed. Then the fibers are pulled apart and placed to give dimension and depth to the background. Finally the background is then carefully felted onto a single sheet so it will stay in place. I just adore how each turns into a unique, one of a kind backdrop for my clients. This process takes several days and sometimes weeks. But it is worth it for the completely one of a kind results.
This little sweetie has a mama who absolutely adores the Little Mermaid. I created an underwater scene using the same technique described above. Then I had the tail fin and little fish friend custom made to go along with the mermaid theme.
This adorable twins setup was created to celebrate the traditional English nursery rhyme Jack and Jill. What a great story they will one day be able to tell as they share this with their own children.
Creating these unique fairy tale newborn images for my clients is so fun. What are your favorite fairy tales/nursery rhymes and what can I create for you? For more information on these and the other hand designed backdrops available through Lindsay Walden Photography feel free to contact us.
Benjamin Von Wong has always been known for his elaborate, fantasy-like photo shoots. However, recreating the fairy tales that he had grown up watching took time, patience, luck, and most of all, a lot of help. These jaw-dropping photographs are bound to generate the customary "Is this Photoshopped?" question. Yet as usual, Von Wong's incredible scenes are all created in-camera, and he goes on to tell us how he pulled off a photo shoot 20 years in the making.
One such passion project was born when Von Wong was a young child. A lover of Disney movies, he always imagined what it would be like to live in a fantasy world, much like the one in "Beauty And The Beast." The grand ballrooms, the enchanted forests, and the majestic libraries all drew young Von Wong in, and surprisingly, that love for fairy tale settings never waned as he aged.
We used a series of small speedlights to light the different arches and ceilings of the library to maintain the depth of the space, as well as our larger Broncolor lights to make our model pop out of the background. A longer shutter speed was used to bring in a tiny bit of the ambient warmth and the flashes were manually triggered by hand when the cloth was thrown to capture the perfect moment.
The resulting images of Brook fitted in beautiful dresses by Polish designer Agnieskza Ospia, leaning off of tall ladders and holding manuscripts hundreds of years old, are jaw droopingly gorgeous, and can invoke childhood dreams inside all of us, no matter the age.
Like every other little girl in the world, I wanted to grow up to be a Disney princess. So stepping into such a wondrous and absolutely ineffable location such as Admont Library, you really do start wondering if it's all real. How has my life gone from that to this?
The best thing about being in that library was that it evoked so many emotions of my life. I have an English degree so my life has been built upon books. I watch far more films than read books these days but I believe in the strength of a story as escapism. I dream in colors and I love to merge the borders of realism in my pictures.
As with most photo shoots, there are always challenges to face. From the cold temperatures of the underground caves, to the struggles of keeping costumes (worth far much than I can imagine) away from the thick clay and mud - it's all part of the game. The fading light in the library posed a new threat to the series where one shot was beautiful daylight but the final shot was completely lit artificially (thanks to Broncolor!) ...oh and not to mention a bladder infection that crippled me to the point that I needed to go to a German Hospital.
These pictures mean the world to me and the memories they derive will never leave. It is always difficult to label one shoot as my absolute favorite. But you know what? I've never seen images like these before. They really are incredible and are paired with such strong emotions of great memories with a talented and most of all caring team.

Bathed in a golden light, she looks out from a photo resembling a fashion magazine spread with a commanding stare, surrounded by massive teddy bears. Instead of yellow curly hair, she wears thick, afro-textured, honey blonde locs.
This is the Goldilocks of CROWNED: Magical Folk and Fairy Tales from the Diaspora by husband and wife photographers Kahran and Regis Bethencourt. The two have reimagined familiar stories with photographs of Black children and, occasionally, new plot points, in an elaborate book of 141 photos.
The book is broken down into three categories: Classic fairy tales, African and African American Folktales and original stories. The couple intentionally casts Black children of different ages, skin tones and hair textures in traditionally white roles, like Cinderella.
In the retelling of Cinderella, "Asha the Little Cinder Girl," Asha wears an extravagant blue gown with purple tulle shooting from the bottom as Jamal, her Prince Charming, slides on a white high-top sneaker instead of a glass slipper.
The Bethencourts began their photography careers in Atlanta in 2009. For a while, they worked in the children's fashion industry, capturing headshots for adolescent actors and shooting campaigns for kids' brands. But they noticed a specific and unsettling pattern among Black children in the industry.
