Each fish is made individually by forming a small vase on the wheel and then pinching a funny mouth into place. Later, when the piece can be handled, eyes and fins are added. A large school of them is fired in a bisque kiln so that glaze may be applied.

A raku firing, which is traditionally Japanese, then takes place. Because of the opportunity for variation in Raku pottery, each personally signed pottery fish ornament is unique. You can find the fish in select galleries across the US.

I think "how" probably can still work as a rendering for 安, but like you I'd go for something a little more up to date than "whence." "You're not a fish -- where do you get off talking about what makes fish happy" would probably be going a bit too far, but I'd be tempted all the same.

I read 全 the same way there -- [子之不知魚之樂][全矣]; "your not-knowing of what makes fish happy is TOTAL" (sick burn, btw) -- and other translations seem to do the same. Legge has "you certainly are not a fish, and (the argument) is complete against your knowing what constitutes the happiness of fishes," according to CText; Mair's translation in Wandering on the Way is "you're certainly not a fish, so it is irrefutable that you do not know what the joy of fishes is." The translation -- Watson's? -- in Sources of Chinese Tradition has "it is also evident that you are not a fish, and so it is certain that you do not know what fish enjoy." Not sure 全 was commonly used in argumentation -- a quick search through CText suggests not, but I'd have to look more closely to be sure..

In Eastern philosophy, however, skepticism is seen less as a threat to our common sense than as a live philosophical option. As I mentioned above, we can see at least a thread of mystical skepticism in Taoism, especially in Laozi; but the playful, ironic skepticism of Zhuangzi is trickier to understand, as well as more philosophically sophisticated. On my reading, the story of the happy fish is a vivid demonstration of the difficulty of properly applying the skeptical rejection of belief.

Last week I was watching this great egret fish in the salt marsh. It seemed quite pleased to have plucked out a fish for dinner. The fish, on the other hand, did not look happy at all.
