Hi Thomas –
I meant to tell you how gracious I thought you were about your
experience fishing with your Tico guide. Sometimes, that is the true
cultural experience – in that you are fishing with another fisherman
from another culture.
In our business, we cater to the “expectation” of what North Americans
look for in a guide service, but that is not to take away from the
real experience of fishing in another country.
One of my husband’s best fishing trips this past summer was when he
and 4 other guys – Ticos – were given access to a private lake (Lake
Cote) to fish by boat. Even though Ron had poles, he spent the day
with “the guys” learning their art of hand-lining with line-and-
bottles. Each of them had about 3 lines out – so image this boat with
15+ handlines out! They didn’t catch anything all day, but it was one
of his more memorable experiences.
We wanted to let you know that we have “re-launched” our website – it
now has sections on Fly Fishing, about Lake Arenal, Photo Gallery,
etc. Let us know what you think – especially if you think it needs
some additional information or is missing something.
We would be very interested in working with you and your tour agency,
as well.
Hope you are well. Kind regards,
Ron and Leann Saunders

Hi Thomas –
We came across your article on the Malden Anglers Assn. webpage –
great article! You really captured the whole Lake Arenal experience!
We were also disheartened to hear that you could have had a better
guide experience on the Lake – and were hoping that you could use us
as a resource for yourself or anyone else interested in fishing –
particularly flyfishing – on Lake Arenal.
We WISH you would have hooked up with us! My husband, Ron, offers the
true North-American style guide service on Lake Arenal, and caters to
fly fishermen with his Abel fly gear. Ron was a member of the fly
fishing group in San Diego for many years.
Our prices are similar to what you paid (we are $225 half-day for 5
hours, $325 for full day 8 hours, for 2 people), and we make fresh
sandwiches, fruit, snacks, beverages, etc.
We can assist with hotels or vacation rentals, tours, etc. as well.
Tssk, tssk to your guide fishing with you – he should have been
placing you in all the best positions for your fishing!
We’ve got a great reputation here -- Check us out at:
www.arenalfishing.com
and our write ups at:
http://www.welovecostarica.com/public/1740.cfm
and the bi-weekly fishing column in the Tico Times at:

I’ve attached a couple of pics of recent catches – and let us know if
we can answer any questions for you! And a pic of our Boston Whaler.
Kind regards,
Ron and Leann Saunders
