Dears,

I still feel we should meet as an interim association. We have made efforts to meet and map the way forward especially in getting our association registered and recognized by the government of Malawi. We could get funding in due course if we do well in such international themes and could even solicit sponsorship from private firms.  We seem to have the Malawian syndrome of never getting started and just hypothesizing about 'what should be'. Again I thought Paul would do us a great favour if he were to come one more time and help us put things into practice. I am not sure how many of us are still active on this circulation considering that we were already a small number last time.

Would we propose a place and time when we can meet if thats ok with all of us?

My calendar is very tight right now. I a tied down with commitments in my business.

I also have to find time to begin preparing for the African Championships which are a month away. If not November, I may only be able to visit in January. I will confirm possible dates once I have better visibility of my November activities.

In the interim its great to hear that you guys will be meeting in Blantyre and Lilongwe respectively. That's the way to go!

 

On registering your association, I am not clear why you have waited this long. In most Countries this is free or costs very little. When I registered the association in Zambia, I paid the equivalent of USD50, but this is the sacrifice a few individuals have to make.

Once you are registered, you can begin to get recognition and possible inclusion into the National Sports budget. It took many years for Scrabble to be included in the National Sports Budget in Zambia. We depended on self and private sector sponsorship. But after proving ourselves, we now do get govt funding to some tournaments. Even the Cape Town tourney, its likely that Govt will pay for 10 air tickets. But this does not come overnight. There will be a lot of self sacrifice before you get the recognition and funding of govt.

So you had better start now.

In the interim I suggest that you people, Blantyre/Lilongwe identify and designate respective venues where people can begin to meet for games. You have players all over Malawi, but without designated playing points, it will be difficult to mobilise new members.

Once you begin practices, we can then set a date when we can hold a tournament. No harm in you guys holding weekend tournaments if you like, but it would be great to have a big and well publicized tournament.

I am based in Zambia and we play regularly over here.

It would be great to have you help in getting Malawi to play organised scrabble.

Which city are you in?

We shall be having the African Scrabble Championship in Cape Town in a months time.

One person from Malawi has shown interest in playing. Should you be interested, maybe you could play for Malawi. Your participation on team Malawi could boost publicity of the game in that Country.

thanks for the message, Paul. I don't know what qualification criteria are for the ASC, whether currently being resident in Malawi is enough. Playing in Cape Town would be fun, but at short notice I'm not sure if I could afford the trip unless there's some kind of sponsorship, which I suspect is doubtful. I'm based in Zomba, which is maybe not the most helpful, but it's not far from Blantyre. i'd certainly be interested in giving any help I can to getting more organised Scrabble in Malawi, so hopefully we can keep in touch. If anyone's based in Blantyre, perhaps we could meet up some time to discuss things, and maybe even play some games!

the way WESPA world championship works is there are quotas per country - don't think Malawi has ever participated so there's no quota yet, I'll have to discuss with WESPA chairman Elie Dangoor. Most countries either have a tournament to decide who qualifies or take the highest rated players

Mike,  thank you for reigniting Malawi scrabble. For some reason, takeoff has been very slow. 

If Malawi players can get organised, I would be happy to sponsor another tournament. 

Indeed it will be very nice to have Malawi play on the World Championship that will take place in Kenya. 

For Malawi to participate, they will need to hold a tournament or  series of tournaments.

Dear all,

just a reminder that WESPA Scrabble championships are taking place in Nairobi from 8th to 11th November. WESPA have allocated Malawi 2 possible places for the main championship. Persoonally I am still not sure if I will be able to go, but if I am able would anyone have an objection to me representing Malawi? I have been living in Malawi since 2013, and was also here between 1998 and 2001. In the UK I was a regular tournament player, and in international terms am rated around 1700. The chairman of WESPA, Elie Dangoor, suggested I could maybe represent Malawi at the event. Is anyone else seriously interested in taking one ot the available places? If you look at the website (https://wespac2017nairobi.com/) you'll see that there's also a last chance qualifier on 7th November and an open tournament, the Kenya International open, taking place from 9th to 11th
