HeyGuys, So I have had my Orbi several months now. Every 3-4 weeks the wifi speed drops to below 30 mbs for download. However the speed test on the unit read 190 mps. The wired speeds also drop to even lower levels. The only way to get the wifi and wired speeds back up that I have found is to do a full factory reset, which as you can imagine is a real pain with so many things running off the system in my home. Can anybody think of what might cause this every few weeks? its goes from consistently 190mps + download speeds to 20-30 mps while still reading full speeds at the unit itself using the genie app thing.
I would first check the basics make sure nothing is wrong with the ethernet cords connecting the orbi to the modem and your PCs also when this happens check the modem by connecting directly to it and run a speed test see if its still getting full speeds.
There have been reports on this forum of people getting slow speeds after doing a speed test through the ORBI QoS page. It appears that doing a nvram reset via telnet commands and then factory resetting the ORBI solves the issue. The important point is to DO NOT do a speedtest via the on-board test mode of the ORBI. Use another website to test your speeds after doing the nvram/factory reset. So far, this advice has worked for me for about 3 weks!
Same boat as you my friend. I'm on GoogleFiber with a PC connected to a TV box (ethernet) and it always reaches 90+ Mpbs Down/Up (capped at 100 Mpbs). Every couple of weeks I get speeds below 50 Mpbs or random disconnects either on my iMac 2013, iPhone 6s, MacBook, and or Nexus 7 yet my PC is still fine so it is not my ISP. Even a SpeedTest now is giving me below 100 Mpbs when I usually get over 500 Mpbs Up/Down. This is after a reset, reboot, network box reboot, computer reboot, and re adding the SSID under Preffered Networks. My Airport Extreme and Express are more stable. Can someone send me a beta of the new firmware?
Late 2013 iMac 5 GHz WIFI - GoogleFiber. Beamforming, MIMO, and Fast Roaming on. I still haven't played with these on the latest firmware though. Speedtest in the admin panel shows 585 Down and 742 Up.
From what I see on this forum/reddit a NVRAM reset (don't have the exact instructions) and Factory Default Reset are the best things to do after the 2.0 upgrade. Do a basic setup and do NOT load in any saved settings from a saved configuation file. Other users are also saying not to do any speedtests in the admin panel and to try disabling Daisy-Chain. -do-I-reset-my-Orbi-system-to-factory-default-settings
So another couple of weeks later and I wake up to find our baby monitor for our 5 week old has no internet connection (netgear arlo q). Immediately I see it has low signal for wifi. It is placed no more than 2 metres from the orbi satelite but maybe 10 metres from the router through some thick walls. I do my usual speed checks and surprise surprise wifi speeds have dropped down from 180 mbps + to below 10mbps again. So I have done everything suggested in terms of factory reset but still it goes from working perfectly and superfast to dropping connections (I am not sure if the satelitte is even working except for its wired connections?!), I can see no obvious action or common cause for this to happen to frequently since day 1 of installing it and through all of the firmware changes. My final step I havent tried is sending it all back to be replaced under warranty, but that leaves me with no router for probably weeks and with no firm reason to suspect the hardware is at fault?! Any ideas please guys, I never heard back from support despite Darryn's comments above and free support has expired......
I did a factory reset last week and saw no meaningful improvments in doing so. Actually had a couple WiFi drops on an iPhone / iMac after reset but speeds seemed to slighty improve. This is just my personal experience though. I hope someone from support reaches out to help.
So less than 24 hours later the speeds vary between 8mbps and 190 mbps, but most at that top end. Anybody had any ideas what might cause the speed drop down to 40mbps to wired and wireless but still getting speeds of 190+ at the router froim the fibre modem?
After I set up everything the way I wanted I started to copy the files (movies, TV shows) from my old Qnap 453A. The problem is that after just a few seconds the speed drops from around 110MB/s to 8MB/s and then even under 1 MB/s.
If anybody else has this problem or this board, for the love go God do not disable eth0! I did and while eth1 was set to DHCP it didn't get an IP address. While stupid me saw the 0.0.0.0 IP in the BMC I thought it was a display error because DHCP for sure would work....of course it didn't and I had to buy a VGA to HDMI adapter in order to access the BIOS or the BMC because I couldn't access it anymore over LAN.
What is the Mfr and model# of the ISP modem the NG router is connected too?
What is the size of your home? Sq Ft?
What is the distance between the router and satellite(s)? 30 feet is recommended in between RBR and RBS to begin with depending upon building materials when wirelessly connected. -far-should-I-place-my-Orbi-satellite-from-my-Orbi-router
Try disabling the following and see:
Armor, Circle, Daisy Chain, Fast Roaming, IPv6 and Set 20/40Mhz Coexistence to 40Mhz only. Set Short preamble instead of Long preamble modes. Save settings and reboot the router and satellite(s).

IF so, This would be a double NAT condition which isn't recommended and would be a cause of problems. -is-Double-NAT

Couple of options,
1. Configure the modem for transparent bridge or modem only mode. Then use the Orbi router in router mode. You'll need to contact the ISP for help and information in regards to the modem being bridged correctly.
2. If you can't bridge the modem, disable ALL wifi radios on the modem, configure the modems DMZ/ExposedHost or IP Pass-Through for the IP address the Orbi router gets from the modem. Then you can use the Orbi router in Router mode.
3. Or disable all wifi radios on the modem and connect the Orbi router to the modem, configure AP mode on the Orbi router. -do-I-configure-my-Orbi-router-to-act-as-an-access-point and =H7LOcJ8GdDo&app=desktop
good luck with all oif these useless questions, your problem is with your FW....additionally it looks like your modem has a wifi built in. you'll need to place one of the routers in AP mode. how long have you had this mode?
I updated the FW after the new year following directions from a Netgear rep on the phone because I wanted to wire my satellites to the router. After the upgrade, the system worked fine but since several weeks ago I started having those pathetic WiFi speeds as I described. When I try to do a FW upgrade, it says it has the latest FW.
Setting manual channels away from others sets the channel which the Orbi uses all the time. No need to have auto make the decision since sometimes i've seen Auto pick a channel that some one else is already using. This can cause problems. You can set back to Auto later if you want to. For example I use 1 and 38 since my direct next door nieghbor uses 11 and 48. Keeps our systems from interferring as best as possible.
But my deco x20 somehow always drops it to 10mb/s. The weird thing is that it's not a limited speed. I can reboot the mesh unit and it will go up to 50mb/s when freshly rebooted. But after a few hours, if I come back, it'd drop back to 10mb/s again.
@TP-Link I have a 200 mbps fibre connection. It works perfectly for a while, and then the speed goes down to 10mbps until I reboot my main deco. Rebooting immediately fixes the problem, but it always returns after a day or so.
Hoping to gain some traction or assistance on this issue. I've opened multiple tickets and spoken on the phone with Google support, but they continue to close out the tickets and send me an FAQ about slow speed. I'm truly amazed Google's support is this bad. I don't think I've come across worse support in the last decade.
Background: Very regularly (sometimes daily and sometimes weekly) the speed across the entire network will drop to essentially zero. I have gig internet and there are no issues with the ISP during these times (they've checked all the error and signal logs on their side).
At first running a speed test from within the Home app would solve the issue. Sometimes power cycling all 3 mesh devices would solve the problem, but sometimes nothing helps. That no longer solves the issue.
This week I discovered that if I give a device priority during this zero speed time, that device will have normal speed but all others remain at zero (I've only been able to try this once though). Checking real time usage, no devices are using an unexpected/high amount of data during this time (so it's not one device somehow hogging the internet).
Im at a loss and so frustrated that I paid the money to upgrade and have worse internet connection (my TP-Link Deco mesh network never had connectivity issues) when I thought I was upgrading to the newest and greatest wifi.
To me this seems like a Google software issue where there is some breakdown in the protocol to distribute internet across the mesh system. I'm no expert on the subject, but through troubleshooting I can come to no other solution.
