As-Samman was one of the most influential Sufi scholars in the history of Islam. He revived and reformed the Sufi teachings and practices according to the Quran and Sunnah (the way of the Prophet Muhammad). He emphasized the importance of sincerity, devotion, love, and service to Allah and His creation. He also stressed the need for balance between the outward and inward aspects of religion, as well as between the Sharia (Islamic law) and Haqiqa (spiritual reality).
As-Samman founded the Sammaniyya tariqa, which is a branch of the Khalwatiyya order. The Sammaniyya tariqa is based on the principles of tawhid (oneness of God), tawakkul (reliance on God), zuhd (asceticism), wara' (piety), sabr (patience), shukr (gratitude), and mahabba (love). The Sammaniyya tariqa has a simple and flexible method of dhikr (remembrance of God), which consists of reciting the names of Allah, the Prophet Muhammad, and As-Samman. The Sammaniyya tariqa also has a distinctive way of salat al-tasbih (prayer of glorification), which involves repeating the phrase "Subhan Allah wa bihamdihi" (Glory be to Allah and praise Him) 300 times in each rak'ah (unit) of prayer.
The Sammaniyya tariqa spread widely in Africa, Asia, and Europe. It attracted many followers from different backgrounds, classes, and professions. Some of the famous disciples and successors of As-Samman include Ahmad al-Tijani, Ibrahim al-Rashid, Muhammad Uthman al-Mirghani, Ahmad ibn Idris al-Fasi, Muhammad al-Hafiz al-Misri, and Muhammad Zaini bin Abdul Ghani. The Sammaniyya tariqa is still active today and has millions of adherents around the world.
