Hi all
First off let me say that I am a complete newbie to 3D printing. My son got me a makibox A6 for xmas which I have finished constructing. I have also downloaded Repetier Host and, after a bit of searching around, found a .inf file that allow me to communicate with the makibox apparently okay. However when I try to print a simple object I hit  a problem. The extruder seems to draw the correct shape but the PLA doesn't stick to the bed and just gets dragged around eventually wrapping itself around the extruder head. I think it may be a problem with the settings as I am using some settings for the printer that I found on the web together with default slic3r settings. Most sites I search point me at a defunct makibox.com site. Can any one point me at a reasonable list of settings or suggest what else might me causing the problem ? Thanks

Wow, haven't seen an email here for a loooong time.

You can check http://makiwiki.com I've still got it up and it has some decent help and mod tips to make it functional again.

You should also make sure the bed is level and calibrated so that it is very close to the nozzle when printing the first layer. Some people use a business card to set the space between the bed and the nozzle. Do this in several places on the bed.

As Lucas said, it's been a long time since we've had activity here. There's more activity taking place at the Google+ Groups: https://plus.google.com/u/0/communities/104721245982726300888. The first question is if you have the stock hotend or the upgraded version with E3D. I hate to say it, but if you are dealing with a stock Makibox hotend, you have almost no chance of getting it to work with PLA. There were a couple of folks who managed, but most didn't. If it's an E3D, you should be able to follow normal 3d printer tuning approaches starting with the makiwiki site.

If you do get it printing, quickly make a print of the FoZen extruder (http://www.thingiverse.com/thing:252539) or some other replacement. The wheel in the stock extruder don't last very long before breaking.

Also, the forum section of the makibox site is mostly archived at makibox.altervista.com. Here's an example of a thread attempting PLA: http://makibox.altervista.org/MAKIBOX_MAWHIRTER_C/WWW_MAKIBOX_COM/FORUM/TOPIC/2968.HTM.

With the right upgrades (E3D, FroZen, Z wobble fix, etc.), it can be a workable hobby printer. My son is home from college and is in the middle of about 120 hours of prints that will join to be a comicon costume weapon.

Hi folks
Thanks for all the info. looks like there's quite a lot to learn. I will go through the tuning videos and relevel the bed. I think I will then try abs instead of pla.
regards
Dick
