I need volunteers and ideas. So far we are doing art tiles + draw bot, artcade, brushbots and origami beasties, pinball tables which need to be wired up for sound and lights which I'll need help and ideas with/for, a harmonograph. I need make and takes and big projects. GO!

I'll be available to help with some projects. I know I want to fix up the rest of the synths from last year and hand them out. If I can get them all working :)
We are also doing the Cyantotypes and Provolt is doing the screen capture again silhouette rig again.
Please use this as a way to fund a cool project that you could not otherwise do. This gives you a chance to show off your skills at little to no risk to you. Don't miss this opportunity to shine.

Could we get boy scouts in to test them and then go through and desolder the ones not working?

We can but I would want to pre-arrange stuff for it and I would want a helper to help me do that.
I did not do it well the last few times and I would not want to repeat my mistake.

That would be great. For this kind of project it's better to make haste slowly than to try to blaze through it or it will just have to be done again.

Is it possible yet to do 8266 in a way that scales for cost? If we could find it packaged with usb plug (even if it's only for power and uses over-the-air programming), the next big hurdle is power. Sending people home with a usb battery pack or even a usb ac adapter won't scale, but people have these already mostly...

It seems there are a couple of options, but still pricey

$2.75 nodemcu with micro-usb plug and usb/uart bridge, but we need the cable and the battery to be solved [1]
$3.69 esp12 with battery holder for 3xaa (add $1 for batteries) [2]

I've thought of a few project ideas for this ... but when you want to scale for cost it becomes an issue.

I'm getting the modules as cheap as $1.50 now, but add a PCB and some assembly and it's easy to hit $2.50+ ... then discrete components and batteries, and you're getting up there.

I think total cost of $4 is where you would end up, even going cheap.

I had thought about a cool little "people detector" idea where you would add an LED and a piezo, and simply have your ESP send ping packets every 15 seconds, and then blink the LED and "tick" the piezo each time it received from anyone else.  Cost and battery life are the biggest issues.

I'm thinking a pic10 microcontroller is super cheap. Yeah limited but you can get them for tens of cents. Perhaps that could be a workable solution.

Beth Sallay

what would you use them for?

Scott C. Lemon

The issue with the PIC is you don't have any networking or communications. With Wifi or 900mhz the "people detector" would tick and blink as you are near other people who have one. And the more people around you, the more it would tick and blink.

We're so close to being able to do some cool wireless peer-to-peer things like this ... does it have to be free or sponsored, or do you think people might pay something if the resulting project was cool enough?

As a side note ... I read this today: http://hackaday.com/2017/02/04/blow-up-your-face/

Pretty cool!

For sure if your project needs networking and such then the pic is out.
That blow up your head idea is great making some kids sized ones and adult sized ones is a winner of a project.

I want lightsabers. Maybe some kind of sumo ring for the brushbots, like what the beyblades use so the are forced to interact with each other. Not sure, does anyone have ideas for some way to get them to fight/race each other?

Scott,

One idea we were considering is to get some attention and partnership/sponsorship by making it an air quality monitor. Imagine if we sent a few hundred continuously monitoring devices out there...

I know the price jumps quite a bit at this point in order to have a sensor that could detect our terrible air quality. Any idea what might work in this application? The data doesn't have to be great, in fact it's not really the point. The publicity would be priceless.

We'd also have to make it really simple to connect to the device and configure it to reach a wifi access point so it can phone home.

If I was walking through the Arts Festival and came upon a booth which
showed that together the group had put up a webpage and had 40 or 50
Wifi monitors already in place around the city and were selling a
subsidized kit for $15 or so that the purchaser could assemble and
then connect to the website. The Arts Festival will NOT allow you to
solder at the booth, but if they buy it they can then come on a
Wednesday and we'll help them assemble it. I'd think these were people
I'd want to hang with. sort of like
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MWHamD1Hj58 the radometer site.

Tracy, I like the idea there to get around the limitations of the arts festival.

We can also get started now and not worry so much about total cost.

I'm going to start a separate thread for this. I have a lot of ideas.

We should plan to find a partner on it and definitely promote it in whatever way we are allowed at the arts festival and maker faire.

Get me a wishlist with cost and timeline. A way for it to be a make and take and for a low attrition rate, integrating science classes, since uaf gets a lot of school participation. Then a diy version would be a next step. Or as close as possible.

I'm old I may be confused - but it is my impression that Pete from
Xmission is a little
tired of shelling out thousands of dollars for us to do the Arts
Festival and not
reaching any Nerds or potential customers. If I remember correctly a
couple of election
cycles ago he ran for something(?) and with Zuckerberg starting his
Presidential
Campaign, Pete may be considering retrying. If he is ,then working on
the "Issues" of Air
Pollution might be something he could be interested in. Probably need
to check with Bill
S. to see how much of this I've misunderstood / Misremembered.
And , yes I may have a small problem with the Arts Festival. I'd
rather be "Hey, we're
doing something we didn't think people like us could do, come on and
join in!" rather
than ,"Observe my masterpiece , cause I'm special (I hate that word)."
How went the B-day?

Here's the list:

Drawbot: Curtiss and Jackie (make and take)
Marble Run: Tom
Sillouette Picture Cutout: John F.  (make and take)
Robot Draw: Henry
Sunprinting:  (make and take)
Artcade: Duane and Alex
Harmonograph: Duane and Alex

Brushbots: Richard  (make and take)
Pinball: Beth, Sam, Tucker, Henry, Charles et al
Light Sabers: Mitchell   (make and take)
Music/Light installation: Jenn
Shake Music Box:  Scott

The stuff that needs $$, lets get a move on that, anything that needs to be ordered from China, time is running out. Stuff that needs to be assembly-line put togethered, that needs to be scheduled so we can plan those and get volunteers together. I can get the U's IT managers to come help. The Arts Alliance has offered to have their volunteers asked and would probably help in exchange for food.

Dad worked 35 years for Boeing in electronics field, Father in law
worked the same in boilers, and other heated pressurized projects.

BOTH had part in space shuttle as well, though not in the GAS pods, but

worked several summers repairing arcade games from single CPU old school

worked on the code and some hardware for all of Weber State + UsU's GAS

bought the space for those and made sure WsU and UsU got an extra share,
as well as seeinr we had connections with some other people who threw
some of our stuff into space

Both NASA and the 2 WsU/UsU designed to stay are still operating,
despite batteries and CPUs/EEPROMS/EPROMS/etc. that should have long ago
given up based on our ground testing

have continued playing with the Motorola SCC and SBC stuff, even as it
has been sold and resold and what not, just got my first arduino,
remainder are on the boat (express packet my <bleep>)

Tinkerer of all sorts, not afraid to puzzle over a problem and come up
with a solution, hardware, electronics, or computer.

Had some weird medical issues starting a decade ago, and then Oct the
paramedics were called because I was on the floor and could not get
up... now left with the two of the list I probably have the most disdain
for neurology is uncooperative at best, sleep is unreliable some days
tho I am getting by as long as I get 6 hours after paramedic adventure
day. IF you notice my mind getting fluffy probably best to have me eat,
go home, or call wife to get me

So here's what I'm thinking. I'm getting some artwork from some of the maker kids, more is appreciated and needed btw, for the pinball tables, the smaller ones need new backboards, the big ones need a giant one plus artwork for the base. I want this to be in all media pictures, instagram, flickr, facebook, etc. Whatever picture someone takes I want one of our kids to have their picture in it, of pinball. Can this be turned into posters?

Can your kid donate some artwork? I need a picture with their name and the date on it. asap.

Can I get an update from everybody? aka I would like to know if people need volunteer help to put stuff together.

1. Artcade - Duane/Alex: It's assembled. I still need to install software on the PC (Linux + artcade special sauce).
2. Brushbots - Richard and Sabrina:  I have everything ordered and they're on their way here. I have 1000 toothbrushes in my front room already. (I asked for a pic only if it's funny)
3. Art Draw: Henry/Alex et al; in progress
4. Pinball: Beth: reconfigurable is done, dino in progress by Sam and Tucker, Giant in progress by Will
5. Marble run: Tom - no info, is this one still happening?
6. Zoetrope: Jen Blum: done (from Mini Maker Faire)
7. Light Sabers: Mitchell Cheever: parts ordered, in progress.
8. Silhouette Printing - John Fenley - was good as of Mini Maker Faire
9. Music Box/Wind Chimes - Scott Lemon
10.Sun printing - Beth - just starting and begging for info and help
11. Make Salt Lake Brag table - Beth - anyone want to bring some stuff
12. Harmonograph: Mike Beck - in progress
13. Drawbot: Curtis and Jackie: Was good as of the Mini Maker Faire, I am sourcing (read begging) tiles.

We are going to have a writer from the Utah Review magazine come next week, I told him wednesday but I can change it to thursday if people feel it would be too hectic, to look at our UAF stuff. which would be better and can you show off projects by then?

Thanks to everyone who came out last night to talk to Les from the magazine, he was very impressed with everyone. If there is anything anyone wants to add or someone couldn't make it but wants to talk to him before the festival let me know and I will put you in contact with him. I am grateful to everyone who has put time in with their projects both for this event and for being willing to show off their stuff for the brag table. I know it can be intimidating to put yourself out there like that but people need and want to see what you are capable of and you guys are pretty impressive. If you are blowing away the peeps of a makerspace I guarantee you the general public is going to be even more impressed. Plus we've got some kids out there to influence.

I love you guys!!!! A new member wandered by the interview while I was putting together some light sabers and he had some kids. My rule is that I can't just give stuff away, kids have to make them so I asked Les if he minded if we made light sabers for a few minutes, it would be quick. He was ok so we made them. All the new adults were impressed at how fast it was, how easily the kids picked it up, I told them we weren't really teaching down to them, there's not any child theories of learning involved. We made awesome stuff and the kids are all about that. Then they played with the light sabers and fought over the pinball table. More interviews were had. It was perfect timing.
