If you are looking for light hobby-grade workshop equipment, and sources of unusual raw materials (off-cuts, etc), then Model Engineering shows are a good bet - such as the large one this weekend in Harrogate: http://www.theharrogateshow.com/page4.html
 
There are others around the country, and many of the same hobby-trade vendors are present.  The club exhibits themselves are also well worth seeing, even if only to see the quality and complexity of items that can be produced, by enthusiasts, in sheds & cellar workshops.
 
I always think that there should be a lot more cross fertilisation between the more electronics-based hackspace movement, and the more mechanical-based "model & experimental engineering" world.
