This rocks!  I love the use of the PIC controlled mirror to accurately direct the laser via USB...

How close are you to taking the captured data and converting it to a STL file for printing on the makerbot?  (I’m sure this is outside of Andy’s goal for his computer architecture class.)  I would also think to get true 360deg scans, we’d need to also incorporate a platform driven by a step motor to rotate the piece and get scans from various points around the object.

It is exciting to see how with the power of the internet, the open-source movement has matured and we are able to create and share so much.

So far we've got .ply files (colored point clouds) and are using Blender
to edit the clouds and Meshlab to convert to STLs. Our clouds are
somewhat noisy right now, but we think that with some software tuning we
can clean them up. In the last day we've gone from really noisy to
somewhat noisy, so we're making progress :)

We've also attached the PIC to a hobby servo motor and added USB control
which should allow us to do full 360 degree scans. I haven't had any
experience merging meshes -- does the group have suggestions on that?

Are there any non-STL files (CAD files maybe) of this? Thanks Dan.

Is this what you're after, Andy?

Awesome. Will try as soon as we have multiple point clouds.

Hi Bryan,

Google Sketchup files are now included with the part.
