I assume you have all seen this. I was searching for a low cost
scanner and ran across this site.

http://www.david-laserscanner.com/

they offer a free version of software (it's not open source) and a
file to print registration boards. all you have to do is add a camera
and a thin line light source (laser or white light).

the free software does not allow you to scan in high res (not sure
what they are classifying as high res)...but it would be interesting
to try.

But the software package does include stitching software and texture
mapping to your 3D file.

I already posted this one, but it probably fellthrough:
Does anybody know a paper, or could give some pointers concerning the
math used here?
i.e. given the camera parameters, how do you calculate the Z-values of
the laser-lit pixels, when you know they all lie on the same plane?

Alternatively: is there an open-source version of david?

(found the link in the documentation). It looks a serious piece of software.

I saw an open source version that someone was using to scan artifacts. It was actually featured in make magazine 2 issues ago. They showed how to build a turn table scanner using lasers and someone had their software listed. I think it was done in python.

I have something started that maps one face of something using a laser line. It won't wrap a model though yet. It simply places points on the lines that are not equal veticle with the line on either side. It requires everything to be perfectly level.
