I did a side by side test where I wrapped Kapton tape on one side of a power resistor and the cheap imported polyimide tape on the other side. The cheap polyimide tape disintegrated (melted) by 200C. The Kapton was fine.

The tape on the left smoked, melted and had to be scrapped off. The tape on the right was fine.

The cheap stuff is fine for build surfaces but not recommended for wrapping nichrome.

Real kapton will do that too if you get up to high enough
temperatures. I put some of the kapton included with my Makerbot on
the uninsulated nichrome of a soldering iron and it started melting
and smoking within a few seconds of being plugged in. It might just be
that the cheap stuff is designed for lower temperatures.

Real Kapton seems to be rated to about 260C and it certainly does not disintegrate below 200C.

Everything fails at a high enough temp :)
