Folks,

Setup firmware sees printer fine, load files and gcode. When i go to connect through the machine control panel it says cant connect. I use the standard setup, so what am i not seeing or doing? The usb works as i see the printer.

Patrick,
When you say setup firmware, which program are you referring to?
Are the files you are talking about loading coming from the SD card?

Please provide more information about your setup and what you have done so far.

Thanks
Erik

Make sure you have 115200 selected as your baud rate.

Erik, I used the getting started tutorial to setup Rambo and the Arduino drivers. I then ordered and installed Simplify 3d. I load a file in it, and it seems ready to roll. I upload the gcode, and it will not communicate with the m2.

Jim it is set at the standard baud rate.

I am sorry Patrick, it has been a long time since I bought and set up my M2. I did not have to do anything with my firmware after I built it. It was only later that I started playing with the firmware.

What is you platform. PC Mac unix?

Jin (notice the n in Jin) has a great beginners guide to S3D that I will plug for him here http://jinschoi.github.io/simplify3d-docs/
Maybe that can help.

I learned a few things even after using s3d for awhile.

Jin forgive my eyes.

Erik, it was the basic installation that came with the machine.

I will read Jin's guide.

Thank you for the quick responses gentlemen

Please make sure you aren't running pronterface or the arduino software in the background that is already using your printer. I have been back and forth a few times and have noticed while swapping programs and forgetting to close one they will "claim" the printer for the time being.

I've sometimes had problems connecting to the M2 through S3D with my laptop PC.  I move my laptop around a lot and connect and disconnect the usb so that probably had something to do with it.  I never tracked down the source of the problem but evolved the following heuristics to take care of it.  (Along with my naive and unsubstantiated working theories about what was happening.)

1. Close S3D before connecting the M2 usb to the PC.  Then turn on the M2 and open S3D.  (theory: S3D checks ports on loading and doesn't refresh.)

2. Before closing S3D be sure to disconnect from the M2 within S3D (theory: to free the port for the next time)

There were a couple of times where I solved it by rebooting everything, but that's been a while so I think this procedure takes care of whatever the issue is.

Gents,

When I hit Troubleshoot on my Laptop, it says that Rambo is an older USB device, and I cant use USB 3.0 on it, I need 2.0, has anyone else heard of that as an issue?  Both USB ports on my laptop are 3.0.  I dont understand though as the PC sees it no problem

If you have a usb 2.0 splitter sitting around you could give it a try to "trick" it to usb 2.0..... its possible anyways, but may not work. Maybe a driver update?

Patrick,

I didn't see anywhere what PC platform (Win, Mac, Linux) you are using.  If you use Mac or Linux, you need to make your account a member of (I think) the DIALUP group to have access to the ttyACM0 port for reading and writing data.  The printer will connect (USB enumeration will succeed), but you won't be able to transfer data on the port unless you have user rights.

Dale I am using windows 8. At this point I dont know what to do. It arrived saying it worked in Ohio. But there is no format for software or hardware in any of the setup guides. On you tube they use many different things. I am a newbie and have now spent 30 hours and can not get it to even print one thing. If anyone can help me with a new get started guide i would greatly appreciate it.

Do you have another laptop or computer that you could test it with? That would be a quick way to help pin down whether it is indeed a computer setup or hardware capability issue. If you know anyone with a Mac laptop you could test with for an hour, there are no drivers required there and I have literally plugged my 2 3D printers (one is an M2) in to the USB port, selected the right port in Repetier-Host and been communicating within minutes or powerup. You could also try Repetier-Host or Pronterface as a test to see if it happens to be something specific to S3D...

patrick have you contacted s3d support? if s3d doesnt connect you need to do that. for the most part many of the members here can help but really the proper channel is to contact s3d on the matter.

I second the suggestion for trying another computer.  Especially one with a usb2.0 port since what you mentioned about that sounded suspicious.  I was connected in minutes from getting the M2 out of the box with a win 7 laptop and USB 2.0 port.  If you still can't connect from another computer then that will help narrow down the problem

S3D makes it easy to switch your license around to different computers.  You can have it on two at any one time, and it's a simple online thing to take it off any one of them and put it on another.  You do need an internet connection though.

Or you could also use the demo version that came with the M2 just to verify connecting on another computer.
