We put some of the new orange 1.75mm ABS filament in the MakerGear store for people to experiment with and it has pretty much flown off the shelf. There are just a few pounds left. We have more colors on order and it should be available later in the month. I'll also have a new hot-end specifically designed to work with 1.75mm filament available around the same time...

1.75mm filament is really nice - I'm really looking forward to getting the materials and tools into your hands so that you can start working with it...

Will a stock (or upcoming stepperbrut) filament drive work with this
or is something smaller-diameter needed?

The objective (at this point) is for the Compact Plastruder to work with either the 3mm or the 1.75mm hot end...so just swap the hot-end and go. I'm testing a new quick mount (that is backwards compatible with the existing groovemount).

We sold out of the first batch of 1.75mm filament yesterday. We'll
have more filament (and more colors) available later in the month.

I'm printing with the compact plastruder using the stepper filament
drive and the 1.75mm hot-end and the print quality is very good!!

Oh man, maybe I won't make a printruder 2 just yet.

Very excited,

The heart with the raft attached was printed on a $3,000 Up printer. The other heart was printed on my printer using 1.75mm filament, stepper motor and our new 1.75mm hot-end.  It is the same object printed using the same filament. (The white object was just used to prop up the heart because of the raft. )

Awesome rick. What was the layer height on yours??

I think layer was 0.2mm. (It was printed with a 0.35mm nozzle)

Any idea (roughly) how long it took? With all the changing variables
I can't quite grasp how different the print speed would be versus 3mm
filament / .50 nozzle / .36 layer height, etc....

I've been changing settings but the last one I printed took 22 minutes.

I attempted to print the infamous handcuff key. Still needs work, but this is straight out of skeinforge, no tweaking...

I'd really like to see other people try to print this so that we can compare results. To be clear, I'm not interested in the handcuff part...this is just a difficult object to print.

This is the key that was in the news

A whole bunch of tiny layers almost always add up to one difficult
print.

Though I know it's not the direction you'd like to go in, I'd be
really interested in seeing this printed with a stepper extruder at a
flow rate of 128 or so - something far lower than is usually used.
(and you'd need to drop feed rate and/or the "width over thickness"
values way down too or it'll come out far too anemic)

I'll see if I can print one with my MK4/0.35 nozzle tonight and post a
picture..

Dave - try printing it and then I'll post the settings I used. I should have included a reference object in the photo...the key is a little over an inch long.

The key (har har) might be to print multiple keys at the same time to
prevent heat buildup? That's how I get good quality small wade gears.

Wow.. That is one tough print..

The picture is from a puny flow rate already, isn't it??

Although, if you wanted one that could actually open the handcuffs -
yeah, that's a little harder:

The one on the bottom might actually work:

Your extruder must be pretty awesome.

Hi guy's,

I'm a newbie but it's important for me to show the best resolution
prints and this 1.75mm filament seems to be it for sure.
Is it possible for you to write up the full nozzle/extruder parts
list?

Is it a Makergear plastruder version..??
I read it's a 0.35mm nozzle, has it got a different extruder mechanism
Is it possible for us to buy it and attach it strait up to a Mendel,
Makerbot..which one?

Sorry to ask so may questions but we really need this higher res
build.

i am curious to how much the feed rates changed, what other benefits
are there to doing to a smaller feed stock, is it cheaper to get,
better to work with, still interesting to see, i like to see people
trying new things.

@DavidB & mike.d - it will be a couple of weeks before we'll announce
the 1.75mm hot-end.

But I can tell you this - I've been using 3mm filament for over a year
and 1.75mm for a few weeks. Though MakerGear will support both 3mm and
1.75mm hot-ends/filament, personally I'll be going to 1.75mm and not
looking back...

Thanks Rick, yeah it's super important for us to use the high res stuff, does it also reduce the pressure on the extruder?
Hey what software do you use? I suspect there will be a few setting changes?
Thnks for getting back to me..much appreciated
