Hello, I've been working on building a Makergear Prusa Kit, and have
run into a problem with the arduino board. When I plug it in, it will
recieve power and the ON LED will light, but Windows doesn't recognize
that the device has been plugged in. I've gone into Device Manager and
re-installed the driver, but it keeps giving me "The device cannot
start (Code 10)"

The strange part is, it had worked just fine a bit less then a week
ago.

OS is Windows 7 Professional 64-bit, I am using an Arduino mega 2560,
and RAMPS V1.4.

Have you changed Arduino boards or IDE versions?

The Rev 3 board has a different USB PID than earlier versions.

Have you made any changes to your USB setup (different USB port or hub for
instance)?

Will it start without the RAMPS board?

I'm still using the same board, And it is not a Rev 3.

Also, I have tried using a different port, but I still had the same
problem.

As for the RAMPS, it does not start without it.

Sounds like you might have a fried USB port or in general your Arduino. The test to try the arduino only was to make sure there were no shorts. since it still doesn't work, any big storms?

To answer both questions here, I've tried it on 2 computers that run
64-bit Windows 7, and one that ran XP.

And I haven't ran the printer during any storms, though once the
laptop had shut off unexpectedly. But when I started it back up the
printer was running fine.

Would a fried board still turn on, with the boot loader intact?

What do you mean by "turn on"? The green LED blinks?

The Arduino has two processors, the ATMEGA2560, and an ATMEGA8 which handles
the USB-to-Serial com. It's certainly possible that the USB side could fail
without affecting the 2560.

Code 10 is generally a driver problem. Windows needs to get the USB product
id from the board in order to determine what driver to use. If the board
isn't communicating on USB, the Windows Device Manager may be issuing the
Code 10 because it doesn't know what to do.

Does Windows recognize the board when you plug it into a USB port?

Try another USB plug.  I find that the skinny ones are failures.  The thicker ones work better.  Especially the ones that come with that bulging cylinder at one end.  I think those prevent some type of interference.  I've experience this difference when using paper printers.

Interesting... Though when I plug in the board, Windows does not
recognize, nor do I get any error about a failed driver install or not
recognizing the device. It seems to act as if there is nothing plugged
in at all.

Also, I have tried a few different USB cords, but with the same
results.

Have you gone to the Arduino site and downloaded their software there?  They should have more info.

When do you get the Code 10 error?

I also experienced problems that ended up being the USB cable. Similair behavior, it worked fine for a while then one day it stopped communicating. I bought a nice beefy USB from the local computer store and everything has been fine since. I've purchased a few extras and got rid of my cheap USB cables, or at least the thinner ones.

I get the code 10 error after installing the driver, and it stays
whether the device is plugged in or not. Also, I tried a cable that I
used for other devices and works just fine, same results.

The one thing is depending on the device it puts different demands on the cable.

The cables I used with my RepRap that started getting flaky worked fine with other devices still, it was flaky with my arduino only.

I would definitely try getting a beefy USB cable and try it to eliminate the cable issue, that was what fixed my problem but of course ymmv

I went and found a high speed USB, thicker and with the cylinders on
each end, but ended up with the same result. Thanks anyway though.

Also, yes I have installed version 0023, and followed their
instructions for installing drivers.

One other thing you might try is arduino 1.0 or Arduino 23, I've found that different versions of the firmware and different boards require different versions of the arduino environment to successfully upload.

First though I would try removing the ramps and making sure you can connect to the arduino and upload the blink sketch. If that works try uploading the firmware, then if that works and you still can't connect while having the ramps plugged in, it would indicate some issue with the ramps board. A short or burned out component that is causing the issue.

I've already tried without the RAMPS, and I don't think it's a problem
with uploading as Windows doesn't detect the device at all.

0023 was released to support the Rev 3 board because it has a different
USB PID than the earlier boards. I assume you didn't install the non-R3
driver.

It was the non Rev 3.

OK, what I meant was you shouldn't use the R3 driver.

One other thing to try, well a couple. Try unplugging all other USB devices. A last ditch attempt would be to delete all the com ports in hardware manager and let windows reconfigure them.

Other than that it definitely sounds like your board is shot.

That's a problem, that's the only USB device I have plugged in, and no
other COM ports show up in Device manager.

How confident are you that the 2560 processor is running?

i.e. What indications of life are you seeing?

Did you try the troubleshooting at http://arduino.cc/en/Guide/HomePage  ?

It was working until I installed a AVSim (Flight Simulator related software for avionics, then I realized I don't need it and uninstalled it).
I did not have any huge or complicated sketch or even a complicated circut on the arduino.
The board is always kept on a wooden/plastic kind of table and I am extermely carefull while handing it.
please help !

I am on Windows7 32-bit.
I don't see any com ports in my device manager. when I just try to add a com port, that also gives the same error. This is even without Arduino or it's installation.
I want to believe that this is a Windows problem, but I don't want to re-install my OS to fix this.
please help !
