Hi everyone,
My name is Haeyoung, I am interning at Makerbot this summer working on
makerbotmusic. I am a chiptune musician and a performer as well (a.k.a
Bubblyfish- http://www.bubblyfish.com).

My short time goals with a makerbot is
1. To create three parts (x, y, z) music.
2. Build controllers that would turn makerbot into an instrument.

I am fascinated by the idea of creating music on a makerbot, and
would love to make something cool, and implement the makerbot in my
performance and compositions. However, I'm not very familiar with
programming in general including GCode, and the mechanics of the
machine. So I am planning on having this forum as my support group,
and ask lots of questions to you guys. If you have any suggestions and
answers, please write me!
Thanks.

Welcome, Haeyoung!

Your message is outstanding news! I caught your set at BlipFest
2009 ... and frankly you and The Hunters were my very favorites of the
whole festival.
I'm thrilled to hear you are jumping on this project -- your work
kicks ass and you will push the MakerBot far enough to make it a good
tool in practice as much as in design.

I was just talking to Zach and Widget here @ the botcave about your
observations that most of the tones have to be driven by the z-axis as
the x-/y-axis drivers are driving short belts. Zach suggested that we
take the model for his motherboard tester (a plastic kit box he
lasercut for doing extensive motherboard testing) and reformat it to
house 3 Nema drivers to use as a tool for working out the math for
getting tones from the stepper drivers. What do you think?

Anyone else have ideas for the ideal project box to test the component
elements of the MakerBot to work out all of its musical properties?

Also, there is the idea of building a makerbot "beltless" -- and
making further modifications to the case to tune/enclose/etc the parts
of it that will make it a kick as musical instrument. Of course, the
work to solve how to generate the moves to generate the tones is still
the important bit....

Anyhow, I'm not especially useful for the coding challenges .... but I
have a number of contact microphones, a film (rather than piezo disc)
pickup, and a guitar coil pickup that I can lend to the challenge so
that you can attache them to whatever MakerBot instrument you create
for analog amplification and recording. I played with them to capture
the sounds that are up on Thingiverse as recordings, but I didn't
necessarily approach the recording with much rigor.

I am following the work everyone is doing with great attention (and am
trying to follow how in the world you folks are doing what you are
doing with gcode, etc., to get what you need from the midi files.) I'd
like to take some Eric Satie midi files I've been gathering (the music
is spare enough that it might work using a MakerBot) so that I can
make the Gymnopedies or (worse!) The Vexations as a wee Makerbot tune.

Thanks,
Matt

I would look into programs like Processing or puredata to get direct
control over the stepper motors. You'll have to get some help with a
Gcode interpreter, but it would be really cool to be able to play the
bot with a keyboard.

Here's a video of my steppers in resonator tubes - long cardboard
mailing tubes - playing the "Imperial March" pde file. I made this
during the assembly of Curio128 and wanted to experiment with acoustic
amplification before mounting the steppers.

Maybe you can try something similar with your bespoke stepper box.

Go!

That's also a good idea. If we were doing that I think we should use
makerbot as a controller, and create some kind of visual patterns or
sound via processing. I believe that music does not have to be
conventional melody and harmonies. I think Makerbot would create a
beautiful soundscape....

We should definitely try a plastic box and see if we can get more
accuracy in pitch. My only concern is that the casing might need to be
wood for the resonance to produce tones.

Hi Haeyoung,

slidly OT but I just wanted to tell you that I just heard through your
compositions and they are AWESOME! If you ever plan to visit Vienna
again, please drop me note or place a huge banner on your site that I
cant't miss it ;)

thanks Henning for the nice welcoming to the group. I don't have any
plans to go to Vienna for the moment, but opportunities always come
up. I love Vienna. In fact, I have played at Ritz bar a few times....
