howdy crew,

here's a short vid of a recent makerbotmusic performance we did last
weekend in seattle:

http://vimeo.com/13273818

we attached contact microphones to all the steppers and pumped out the
audio through the house PA and added a layer of live drums over top
(played by my collaborator mogden). the object we printed was a
pyramid, with a very thin wall which ended up resolving into a pseudo
4/4 time signature of increasing tempo. we're interested in how
different shapes sound, and how we can experience these shapes in
different contexts.

hopefully this can add some more fuel to the makerbotmusic fire!

take care,

That is DOPE!!!

And with the relay baord, you can add another percussive voice.

With a few mods, I can even envision turning a Cupcake into something
like a Drum Buddy:

Go!

for real! workin on it...

already got some photoresistors attached to the LEDs of the stepper controllers, pulsing a 4093 nand gate oscillator... didn't have time to debug it before the show, but maybe this weekend!

Awesome video!

Can't wait to hear added percussion features on the MakerBot.  We don't need the relay for our HBP (knock wood) but sounds like I'll have to order one anyway...

That sounds awesome!!

I was thinking of printed shapes like castle crenellations that are
mounted to the build platform and are moved in and out of light beams
to trigger the oscillators. I like your idea better, and it will work
in a wider range of ambient lighting situations too.

Please keep us updated on your progress!

Go!

What I enjoyed most about the piece was that EFFALO was not using the
MB purely as a thing to make sound with, but was building something
that actually exists and using the sound of that to listen to / play
along with. As I understand it, midi2cnc just makes the motors twirl
at the right speeds for sounds, but does not actually try to build
anything. The idea that an actual plastic object as well as a
recording are "Artefacts" of the performance really intrigues me.
