I recently upgraded my replicator 2 to the new 7.0 firmware and now no matter what i am doing (returning to home position, attempting to print, or even manually jogging) the x-axis will shake violently making a horrible noise about half the time. Sometimes it will transverse fine for a few seconds then it will start shaking and get picked up again. I checked the connection to the stepper and jiggled it, but nothing seems to be wrong and jiggling has no impact on it. I decided to flash back to 6.2, but it is still happening in the old firmware now. Anyone have any idea what is happening?

You're the second person to note this error, the other one was burried
at the end of this thread: http://groups.google.com/group/makerbot/browse_thread/thread/c405c16ddeb82f37

Check both, it could be wiring but more likely is just the firmware
needs cleared out back to stock settings.

I person=fluke, 2 people, likely a real bug---Anybody from MakerBot
want to comment?

I had forgotten about this post, what with all the parrot business.  But I've noticed some grinding sounds in the past few days.

For me, it mostly happens during fast circular moves - the insets before my slower perimeters, when I'm feeding at 80 mm/s.  Oddly enough, it only happens in one direction (clockwise, not counterclockwise).  So I'm pretty sure it's not a hardware problem.  The first few times, I thought I was extruding too much plastic and I was grinding against the previous layer.  But I've checked it many times, and that's not the case.

The only explanation I have is that there's something weird with the slicer settings or the firmware.  These prints were generated with MiracleGrue at 0.10mm layers.

I can live with it for now, but it's slowly starting to get on my nerves.  Primarily because the sound always makes me worry that the print is failing.

Yes I have heard a a similar noise - like a very harsh mechanical rumble from time to time but very intermittent. It didn't seem to affect the print so I just ignored it.

May seem silly but have you tried greasing the X axis rails?

& idler pulley?

In my case, yes every 50 hours, I use inox synthetic mx6 with PTFE - I really do think its a firmware issue, it seems to happen on small internal loops, but I tend to hear it rather than see it - so not entirely sure what causes it.

ok, I lube the hell out of my idler pulley and vertical axis so not that.  And after more investigation I had a big wire short.  Spliced the bad spot and we are all good.  Video of the short below

That's not a short, that's an open. Also, very bad to keep arcing it
like that. Your fragile stepper driver is highly prone to letting the
smoke out by repeatedly doing that for the video.

ok Jet guy.  Magic smoke is contained.  New wires are better than old ones.
