Hi Guys

Whats the current story on the Plastuder updates? Back around
Makerfaire time word was the Plastruder MK5 was a major improvement on
old designs and would be out soon after the faire. The drive gear is
up on the store, but no signs of Plastruder updates. The wiki page
goes dead after march/april. There was a post to the forum
referencing the svn page for mk5 but that appears to be a dead link.
Exploring the svn tree I found there is now a plastruder-mk6 instead.

I stopped working on my old Mk4 based makerbot a couple months ago
when it was taking hours to get a single part made due to feed
problems. I figured waiting a bit for Mk5 was better than spending
days trying to get Goldbot functional.

Are we going to see a Mk5 this year? or has development on Mk5 stopped
and Mk6 is now the main branch? What time frame are you thinking
about for either as a beta? Any hints would be appreciated.

They just hired a full time EE.. I'm guessing he's working hard on the
controller and that the delay will be well worth the extra wait.

I'm a fan of thinking just about anything is fixable.. What symptoms
were you seeing?

Status update:

MK5 submitted to production June 15th.  This is manufacturing, so there is a built in 4-8 week leadtime no matter what. The machined parts were quoted as 6-8 weeks.  Keep your fingers crossed.  Conservatively, we're shooting for Aug 15th.  Don't hold us to those numbers, but that is our goal.

MK5 will blow your socks off.  We've logged hundreds of hours on it and its an extremely reliable little beast.

MK6 is active because dev moved on and is now trucking on the next version.  Next demon to slay:  oozeing.  :)

Zach

Or my guess could be totally wrong and it's already in production...

If we want one, MK5 will be a drop-in replacement for the MK4, yes?

yeah, mk5 is a drop-in replacement for mk4.  you may want to get a relay board to power it though.

...and it has 2 channels.  so you can easily drive a HBP and a MK5 extruder no problem with a Gen3 extruder controller.

So the Mk5 extruder will require the Relay?

most likely.  the heater is going to be 2.5 ohms.  at 12v that pulls 4.8A for a total of 57.6W of heater action.  there's a bigger thing to heat up.  chances are that the current mosfets will not be able to handle this.  the gen4 extruder controller will have much better mosfets that are designed with this in mind.

of course you could use a smaller heater or only run one of the resistors or use 2 mosfets, or a couple other hacks to get it working using stock parts.

I spy a plastruder MK5: http://www.flickr.com/photos/connors934/4803390701/sizes/l/in/photostream/

Looks really nice, I like the use of the paxtruder drive system and
power resistors for the hot end, does this mean an end to the PTFE/
PEEK barriers?
