Next barrier to mousetrap printing: having solved my software issues, I'm trying to get my new roll of plastic working.

It's natural ABS from Reprap Source, and it's visibly less shiney but still the same colour as Makerbot ABS.

It spools in ok, and melts and extrudes for a few seconds, but then the pinch wheel strips and I have to start over.

I've tried this at +5, +10, +20 degrees over my normal temperature for Makerbot ABS, with at best marginal improvement. At a measured temperature of 250 or so (lower in reality- my Makerbot routinely stripped MB ABS at anything less than 228) it was still stripping after maybe a metre of noodles.

I think Aragorn on this group at least has experimented with this plastic, has anyone got advice to offer in getting it going?

Thanks! Wish I could buy MB ABS and avoid the hassle, but geography prohibits this.

Have you confirmed it's not just that the toothed pulley needs flossing from the previous strippings?

Indeed. The problem defies even flossing.

I can't offer much help but to ask if you have also tried to decrease
your pwm setting. Maybe the higher heat is still not enough and this
ABS just needs to have time at temp as well.

Hi Cathal,

this won't help your current problems, but we have someone who imports makerbot supplies in Belgium.
He has all colors ABS in stock.
Maybe shipping costs from Belgium to you is affordable?
His website is http://kd85.com/

Hope you find a fix for your problem.

Cheers

Kurt

hmm... if flossing doesn't help then what is the *exact* filament
diameter? I bet it is a gripping issue. can you post macro pics of the
teeth bite marks left in the filament by your pulley?

Thanks for that lead Hexman! Will look there for my next batch perhaps, though right now I have 5 kilos to burn first.

@Jet Diameter is slightly wider at 3.1, so this could be an issue. I'll post pics later, but the teeth are digging in all right, plenty deep. Perhaps too deep, but the fact that it extrudes for a while puzzles me.

The standard PTFE barrel is sized just right for 3mm filament. This
is likely your problem.

do manual test extrusion for 7 whole minutes. time it and watch, and what is result (at how many min does it stop extruding)? try again at 210 PWM setting for 10 min. what is result (please time it again)?

I have also tried Reprapsource's ABS filament, with bad results. Main
problem is that it is 3,1mm diameter and Makerbot ABS is 2,9mm.
Drilling the heater barrel to 3,1mm could help. Also i found out that
for some reason it's harder to extrude than Makerbot filament. I dont
know but maybe it needs higher temperature or something.

My opinion is that if you are using Makerbot, you should use Makerbot
filament, it is tested and optimized for it.

Wish I could, but shipping to Ireland alone costs more than the plastic I think!

Just had a thought. Check the internal diameter of the PTFE. All you may need to do is (carefully) bore out the inner diameter with a 1/8"=3.175mm or 9/64"=3.57mm drill bit so the ABS at least makes it to the brass barrel independent of any thermal expansion effects.

Aside: Stumbled on a handy drill bit size chart - http://bobmay.astronomy.net/misc/drillchart.htm

Andrew.
