OK, I'm stuck. I replaced my build plate this weekend with the glass upgrade from Bottleworks. As per his advice, I changed firmware to Sailfish. Problem is, no matter how I adjusted settings, my steppers would stutter (I tried both retraction and deprime on alone, both off , and both on as per wpthomas' settings). Closest I got was only stutters on the x runs, y was working.

So, I gave up.  Problem is, via both Replicator G and Makerware, there is no option to restore the 2x firmware.  In Rep G 0040r22 the option does not exist.  In Makerware, once I choose 2x as my bot instead of 2, the upload firmware command is greyed out. How do I get back to factory firmware on the 2x?

Thanks

Still not clear how to revert using Rep G but retetting to defaults via the onboard menu, changing the bot settings to dual extrusion and HBP then restarting Makerware allowed the bot to be acknowledged as a 2x, then firmware update was possible.

Sailfish firmware is NOT hosted on a MakerBot update server. MakerBot stock firmware is NOT hosted on a Sailfish update server. YOU had to change it when you installed the firmware. If you want to go back to STOCK firmware, then you can either revert Replicator-G preferences to defaults which changes the setting automatically or change the update URL manually just like you had to in the first place.
Go back and read the installation directions for Sailfish.
This STEP IS KEY:

Step 2.3: Obtaining the Sailfish firmware

Start ReplicatorG and and from the ReplicatorG menu, select “Preferences”. Click the “Advanced” button. Change the “Firmware update URL” field from:

http://firmware.makerbot.com/firmware.xml

to

http://jettyfirmware.yolasite.com/resources/release/firmware.xml

Then click “Close”.

Preferences screen showing URL

After a few minutes, you will see something written in the bottom log region of ReplicatorG indicating the firmware has been downloaded; e.g.,

  3495 bytes written to ~/.replicatorg/firmware.xml
  351571 bytes written to ~/.replicatorg/fithermware/Mighty-mb40-Sailfish-v6.2.0-r642.hex
  345737 bytes written to ~/.replicatorg/firmware/MB-mb24-Jetty-v3.1-3.5-r507.hex
  328224 bytes written to ~/.replicatorg/firmware/MB-mb24-Sailfish-v4.0-r642.hex
  345716 bytes written to ~/.replicatorg/firmware/MB-mb24-2560-Jetty-v3.1-3.5-r507.hex
  328203 bytes written to ~/.replicatorg/firmware/MB-mb24-2560-Sailfish-v4.0-r642.hex
  159154 bytes written to ~/.replicatorg/firmware/MB-rrmbv12-5DShield-Jetty-v3.1-3.5-r634.hex

If you don’t see this message or something similar after a few minutes, restart ReplicatorG

Sounds like you didn't reset the EEPROM to factory defaults.

The download URL for Sailfish doesn't encompass MBI firmware. Reason being
that I doubt MBI wants the Sailfish community distributing MBI's firmware.
So change RepG's download URL back to the MBI download URL,

http://firmware.makerbot.com/firmware.xml

You then use the Rep 2 7.3 firmware for your Rep 2X: MBI doesn't make
Rep 2 vs. 2X distinctions in their firmware.

This is what was getting me.  I got Sailfish installed no problem (including flashing rom), and reverted to MBI firmware no problem.  The bot would just not show up as a 2x in Makerware or on the onboard LCD until I changed the onboard settings to dual and HBP.  Then it showed as 2x onboard and in Makerware.

I'm not dissing Sailfish either by any means, I just had not luck over 8+ hours testing, and ended up with 2 clogged nozzles, I expect due to my conflicting or improper retraction and deprime settings.  I also got to experience my first clogged gear so apart came the extruders and on went the wpthomas based upgrades; very happy with that mod.

I do appreciate the replies from both of you.
