I just loaded PLA into my left extruder, and prepared a job using the PLA as a soluble support....at least, that was the intention.
After boiling it for two hours in concentrated sodium hydroxide solution I still had trouble cleaning up! Also, PLA seems to dribble
a lot and overall I'm not very impressed. Guess its back to ABS and break-aways.....

Anyone got soluble support to work effecctively? If so, how?

What temperature were you print at with PLA? If you use the default ABS temperatures it literally pours out the nozzle, try again at 170C and there's almost no dribbling and still prints fine for me, at least.

Pretty sure PLA isn't water soluble... PVA is - totally different monster... FYI.

He wasn't trying to dissolve it with water...

From Makerbot:

Good luck!

That explains why I was struggling with concentrated caustic soda.......not nearly nasty enough!

How are folks getting on with PVA as a support for PLA? suspect delta T a bit high for PVA and ABS....might get some and have a go though.....

When I get the itch to try PVA I will probably get it at Protoparadigm
because they sell it in in 1/4 lbs quantities for $14 so I don't risk
a lot.

Friend of mine (Kaz!) suggested using ABS as the soluable material.
Print in PLA, ABS for supports. Drop the object into an acetone bath
and the ABS dissolves. Anyone try this?

nophead, I believe, has tested PLA in acetone -- and the resulit is a brittle mess, apparently...  Ah, yes: http://hydraraptor.blogspot.com/2012/04/more-trifurcated-pla.html
