I just got my Replicator 2 - my first 3D printer.  I really enjoy it so far.  FYI, I got it to be able to serve a client with quick turn plastic parts that would be cheaper than SLA.

The second thing that I printed is a large plastic case for a portable instrument.  I let it run overnight (about 8 hours so far), and it is 68% finished.  With 8 hours of runtime now, the machine is squeaking like an old rocking chair.

I haven't diagnosed exactly what it is (still in the middle of the build), but I'm assuming it is the x-axis idler pulley, thanks to this video:

It seems like this is really needing a ball bearing upgrade.  Has anyone created a pillow block for the replicator 2?  I found some similar designs for some of the older makerbots, and I didn't want to re-create the wheel.

BTW, I ordered the whp extruder kit from makerbot after mining these forums, only to find out that my rep2 from amazon shipped with it already installed.

First thing -- take out the idler, clean it up, and grease the shaft with PTFE grease. You need to do that about every 50 hours of runtime or the plastic will eventually wear out.

Al M is working on an X idler bearing kit. He will probably have some for sale next month I think. A few of us are trying out the prototype right now and it's working well.

Carl has put together a few simple bearing options that you might be able to copy -- basically just put a few plain bearings on the idler shaft, between a couple washers. You don't really need something with teeth for an idler.

My 2x is fairly new, I had to grease everything less than an hour after printing using their included grease. It started squeaking again 10 hours later.  I ordered PTFE super lube from amazon,  thoroughly hit the idlers and Z and very finely hit the gantry. After a thorough lubing, all my noises went away.

Thank You Ryan. Yes if testing all goes well and i feel it will this should be ready near the end of April if sooner i will update everyone. The bearings are rated to 6000rpms and 304 ss shaft .

          Thanks , Al

Hi All,
Has there been any development on this?   I just received and started running my 2x and despite repeated greasing of the idler pulley the thing will not stop squealing.

Thanks in advance.
