So after having stripped one of my stepper motors I decided to get a few replacements and picked up 3 from makergeeks.  I attempted to install one of them last night and as soon as I connected the stepper motor to the makerbot cable the motor make a knocking noise (nothing else is connected so its not filament or an extruder etc.).

It almost seems as its jumping steps, or going forward then backward etc.

I'm assuming the wiring is differnt for the makerbots than with the standard nema stepper motors from most places.

Does anyone have a resource of which pins are which for the makerbot so I can rewire a connector to use the new motors?

the makergeeks motors are:

MakerGeeks.com NEMA 17 Pin-Out Specs
  • PIN1= B-
  • PIN2= B COMMON
  • PIN3= B
  • PIN4= A
  • PIN5= A COMMON
  • PIN6= A-

thanks in advance(i'll keep searching on here and the interwebs too and put the info here if I find it first!!)

You want 1,3,4,6 according to that wiring diagram. 1,3 are one coil and 4,6 are the other coil. Should be the same as the stock MBI plugs.

What are the motor specs? Are you giving it the right current?

Here is the direct link to them on makergeeks: http://www.makergeeks.com/nestmofor3dp.html

but here are the specs according to the website:

Can be use as 4 wire bi-polar Or 6 wire Unipolar
  • Power Supply 12-36VDC
  • NEMA 17 Form Factor
  • Step Angle (degrees) : 1.8
  • Holding Torque: 21N/cm
  • 6-Lead Wires, Wire Length 2"-3"
  • width  42mm x 42mm
  • total length of 37 mm
  • 5.00/4.6mm diameter shafts
  • shafts length 16.4mm
  • Weight 7.6 oz.
  • Type of Laminated Stator (2 Phase Hybrid (Better Performance at high speed))

I'm certainly not an expert in electronics so I wouldn't doubt it if I picked up something that I couldn't use, but I guess I was under the assumption that nema 17's were all pretty much the same for how we use em.

Based on what you posted, David, it should be 1,3,4,6. HOWEVER, I've seen steppers where the pinouts were not as described.  Instead, 1-6 was a pair, and 3-4 was the other pair. Use a meter to check.

Make sure you don't hook up to the center-taps, by the way. You want the higher-resistance pairings.

NEMA 17 is just the mounting place standard. Any two NEMA 17s are physically interchangeable. But not necessarily electrically interchangeable. You need to know the coil resistance and inductance and max current (or rated voltage) to have any hope of comparing two steppers, which Makergeeks doesn't specify. It's entirely possible to mismatch a stepper and a driver, or have the wrong current specified in software (on Makerbots using digipots) too.
