I've been playing with the various options on my new Rep 2  and had a few prints that didn't really seem to print right unless I used a raft, or would've been too hard to remove from the plate.
However, the rafts that Skeinforge creates, compared to those created by the MakerWare slicer, are crazy heavy duty and I can never fully get them off the finished print. ( I've found the MW slicer rafts don't stick... that's another question: https://groups.google.com/forum/?fromgroups=#!topic/makerbot/7q6GcBeE1-s)

Is there a way to tone down the rafts a bit so that the aren't so hard to get off?

Yes, under the raft plugin, change the base flow rate.  You'll want to play around with it until you get it just right for your setting -- when you do, it'll come off like velcro!

Don't think I can do that since I'm using MakerWare at the moment... though I probably should try using ReplicatorG

This should be possible in MW, but you'll need to create a custom profile.

Sadly, multiple requests from MBI have not yielded their default settings, do 'tweaking" them is not possible. You'll have to start from some kind of default that may or may not be close.

BTW: have you tried Enginwiz's MW profiles on Thingiverse. Quite good! And you can tweak his if needed, by editing them.

Ok, thanks for the info. I'll definitely grab those and try :)

Today I had to print a large and solid PLA part that needed support for large horizontal overhangs.
I sliced the part in Makerware 2.1 and Inspekteur the gcode with Repetier Host before printing.
The generated support structures looked a lot better than in earlier versions of Makerware.

I do not use rafts any more. With hairspray on a well leveled cold glass plate the parts stick very well.
To remove the printed part from the build plate I put both into the fridge for some hours.
At - 15 degrees Celsius the part separates itself from the glass plate.

Today I started to remove the support structures, that are simmilar to the rafts, right after the part
was taken out of the fridge. At - 15 degrees Celsius PLA is very brittle. The support structures
came off easily.

You could try to freeze your part to remove the raft with less effort when the PLA is more brittle.

If I have to build a part where I can't afford to have a surface with raft on it, I found this works:

Once you have decided which face of your model is to be on the build surface, create one small peg on that face with a diameter of 0.5mm and a length of 2mm.  Then position your part on this tiny stilt.  Then select raft and supports and the Makerbot will build support walls up to your part and these can be removed much more easily than the raft (the entire lower face will be an overhang).  The last time I did this, it did even try to print the peg, it just made nice neat support walls.
