Hi there,

I'm approaching the end of a couple of my original spools and I'm worried about running out mid-print... What is the empty weght of those spools?

Sorry to re-ask for info that must be out there, I just couldn't seem to find it. I may have my search blinders on today. For future ref, is this sort of info on a wiki somewhere?

Thanks!

Adan

I never put one on a scale yet because I don't have an empty one yet,
but I saw Protoparadigm say that you save 12 oz in weight if you buy
their filament in bulk, and put them on their new reusable spools.

Don't worry about it. Just get the filabot and recycle all those empty spools into new filament.

That's a good point, I remember seeing them mention the number. It seems pretty high to me... but without yet handling an empty it's hard to say.

I just threw an old MakerBot spool on a cheap kitchen scale I have and it came in right around 290 grams or 10.3 oz.

I just did the same. My scale reads 301 grams, or 10.6 oz. This is my
first empty spool - the default black that came with the printer.

Remember that there are at least 2 spool designs - the generic one and the newer one with the MakerBot logo on it - so there may be two different weights.

Awesome, thanks! Per John A's comment, is this the Makerbot logo spool that came with your Replicator?

Mine, the 290 gram one is the older design.

I have the two spools that came with the Replicator - these both have
the Makerbot logo and a cube pattern on them. I also have some other
spools that do not have the logo or pattern - just radial support arms
(not sure how best to describe that). Both styles came from MakerBot.
I have weighed an empty spool of each of these - no filament, just the
spool and whatever paper labels it came with.

Spool with Logo: 301 grams / 10.6 oz
Spool without Logo: 306 grams / 10.8 oz

I think the minor difference we are seeing *may* be related to
environmental differences (humidity, etc.) But that is just a guess.

Anybody else think it would be a great idea if MBI offered a recycling program for empty spools?
Then they can have to spools reloaded, save a few bucks, save the planet, keep getting us to spend more money with them.

Ship in 5 empty spools and get a $25 credit towards future purchases? Something like that.

Shawn, thanks for the data. I'd say those are pretty close. Hopefully I won't be pushing it to within a gram on a print!

David, I agree, something like that sounds pretty good. Are you familiar with the system that Proto paradigm is proposing? Essentially have some reusable and resizable spools of your own, either that you make yourself (designs on Thingiverse) or that you purchase from them, and then buy coils of filament that you can put on the spools and then easily swap out for different filament. That's how I understand it, I may be missing some details.
